  • Automatic turn signals won't stay on!

I have been riding my 1982 XJ1100 Maxim for about 2 weeks now trying to work the bugs out of it since it has been parked most of its life. I has 16,200 miles on it. I have put just over 60 miles on it trying to get these carbs cleaned out without removing the little beasts. Finally they run fine and now I am having trouble with the turn signals. Starting yesterday, I have to hold the switch to whichever signal I want to use the whole time I want them to blink. As soon as I release they shut off. Can I circumvent the automatic shutoff and be able to manually shut them off when I push the button "down on the XJ". I bought this bike because it was an inexpensive means of having a streetbike once again. If I have to buy an expensive automatic gadget to straighten this thing out my bargain won't be as great a bargain. 2nd gear seems normal at least for now.

Also, is there somewhere I can get a seat cover for this 82 XJ1100. I see all sorts of other bikes but can't find the Maxim seat cover. I would like to keep it from looking recovered with a smooth vinyl and retain the textured pattern similar to what it has.

It is the "signal cancellor unit" which is a rectangular gizmo right under the seat.

Ooops, sorry. I see now that you were referring to an XJ and I was talking about an xs11. Disregard my previous advice!

Still need help on this one. The turnsignals work perfect the first time or two that I use them in the morning but then they are guaranteed not to work the rest of the day without holding the switch on.

Mine do that every spring. Each spring I just unplug, wipe, and plug any connector I can reach. Always works. Frequently a signal light quits, it is always a loose connector, or some bit of corrosion in the lamp socket. My guess is since it has been sitting for so long there is oxidized material between the connections inside the switch. I have a Vetter fairing, that 9 pin connector is a good culprit also.

                Unautomatic turn signal

Can't speak directly for an XJ - but my XS11 has had a couple of auto-canceller faults, leading to a final (and cheap) solution.

First fint the unit itself - on my XS it's on the top left behind the left side panel - for an XJ you may have to do some fishing around.

On the XS if you disconnect the unit (should be a connector about 3 inches up the wires) you get back normal indicators that stay on until the button is pushed in. Mine's been running like this for a long time now with no ill effects.

Anybody have a picture of what the thing looks like. I will just disconnect it if it will return the signals to the manual type like my XS 850 triple.

Can't help too quickly with a photo - but Ken to the rescue with his microfische page again, I can link to the appropriate parts diagram

You are looking for part numbered 24 here and it's got a rubber outer which has a slot to fit on a bracket on the frame. As mentioned before - mines to the left hand side (so towards the front of the bike) behind the left side cover. Can't say if other models tucked it away anywhere else.

                    Good hunting

Isn't it supposed to fit vertically on a metal tab just ahead of the battery? Mine doesn't fit on the tab very well, is that common? Also my unit sometimes works like a charm, other times it doesn't cancel at all, very irregular.

THANKS, I will unplug that beast and see if that cures my problem.
