???? Huh?
There's a plunger inside the tensioner. There's two allen screws on the front that hold it to the block, then on the side, (Right side of the bike, left if you're looking at the adjuster from the front) there's a bolt with a nut. This bolt is the locking bolt, and the nut is there to make sure the locking bolt doesn't "Unlock"! lol.
The aluminum housings on these adjusters is easy to strip, so use a torque wrench when tightening this nut and bolt.

the aluminum housing has a large "nut" with a smaller bolt on it on the side...(left side if you are looking from the front of bike)
i dont want to strip it out...so do i loosen the smaller nut, then the larger one, or vice versa?'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"

Take it off and check it out
I know you might not want to get into it this far but take it off and check it out. Only two bolts hold it on and you can make a new gasket very easily. That way you get to gain alittle knowledge and see first hand how the part works.Mike Giroir

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

Did you read procedure in manual for adjusting cam chain?
mro
BTW,The aluminum housings on these adjusters is easy to strip, so use a torque wrench when tightening this nut and bolt.
Not tight enough or if stripped and you can wind up with bent valves
