I found a 79 special for sale ,the guy wants $500 for it but say it slips out of 3rd when he gives it . Does that sound like a clutch issue or tranny ? Other than that it looks good 4 into 1 new tires nice paint.

If it was a clutch issue, you'd probably have a problem in other gears also. JMHO. I've had 3'rd go out at 50K miles. Chances are sooner or later you'll have to go thru the tranny anyway.2H7 (79) owned since '89

$500 CAD! tell the guy you did some research, It's a very costly transmission fix and try to talk him down. If he won't come down, buy it anyway, it's a great deal. On the outside chance that the bike is 50% shot, it's worth more than that as parts.
