  • second oil drain bolt

I know this is a familiar question to most But I am changing my filter and oil for the Talimena Rally and cannot find the hidden oil drain bolt in a deep recess.

The large bolt in center line at the rear of the engine is the middle gear drain, I know.
There is a flanged bolt located in a recess on the left side toward the engine front and kind of inline with the filter and forward of the main oil drain bolt which may be it. It is also slightly hidden by the frame tube and would require a knuckle drive to remove.
Any help in describing or PIX of where this drain is will help out very much
    Thanks

Second oil drain bolt? There isn't one. There is only one drain bolt for the motor oil, (cener-front of the oil pan) one for the middle drive and one for the final drive.

The other one is on your right side, as your sitting on the bike. It's a little higher than the footpeg and slightly foward of where the kickstarter would be if you had one.
You just have to turn the bike upside down to use it.

If I understand this right.. I think what you are describing on the left side of the pan in a recess against the frame is the where the oil sensor is with one itty bitty screw holding a wire to it.

There is a bolt in the center of the filter cover that removes that cover along with the filter and @ 1/2 a quart of oil or so. The main oil plug is on the front left side of the oil pan as you're sitting on the bike. It is on the left side to help it drain with it on the sidestand. The bolt faces forward on the front edge of the pan.

            oil sensor
Actually that's the nuetral switch. That's the switch that, when grounded, turns on the neutral light. It's definitely not a drain plug although oil may come out if you remove it!

The item with the wire attached is definitly found on both the XS and XJ. It is the neutral switch. The red item in the pic is the oil level sensor, found only on the XJ.

The bolt I was referring to is forward of the oil level sensor by about two inches and on the left side. Some time ago there was a thread talking about some oil reservoir that didn't drain when the oil plug was removed. they were talking about, I believe, 144 ml of oil.
Tod I know about the filter and oil drain bolt.
Maybe they were talking about another bike, the X?
On the crank case drawing the part number was 41 on page B-12, but maybe that is the middle gear drain, Hypoid oil not engine. When do I change the middle gear oil(miles)? I use Royal Purple in there.

                    I think

I think that thread that mentioned the extra oil referred to when they took the side case cover off . Then some more oil drained out . I could be getting confused with Mike K's post about this on XJ-Owners . So much info - so small brain
