  • Cracked carb boots

    After looking at the XSchops and cokemans bike pics, I decided tp remove the 2 cans of krylon the PO left on the engine for me. after it was all said and done I really notice the cracked carb boots.
    I am thinking of fixing them, off the bike, this way: Scrub them down with simple green, wipe them down with acetone (nail polish remover) because it leaves no residue, and cap them off and spray them with Dip-it (liquid rubber). Anyone have any other ideas?

    Yup ... somethin' like that's ..

    been done before. People even have wrapped them with 2in. electrical tape .... several solutions can be found here on this site with a search.

    Fact is: much of the time the external cracks don't go all the way throught the boot and thus; not really a problem. New ones can be had here for 90 bucks.

        Thats been my take on all my bikes...but than it's 10 feet away and only at night, but under a street light is okay.

          I gave up as none of the coatings seemed to work and would break down with the gas fume exposture.
          I found a full set of boots for under $100 at PartsNMore.com. They are great and the bike runs soooooo much better since installing them. I'd go that way.

            Barberad - mine were pretty badly cracked so I took 'em off, cleaned 'em and roughed 'em up good, and applied ten coats of plastidip spray. That was at the beginning of the summer and they are holding up beautifully, and you don't have to be ten feet away to admire them. The trick is to apply all ten coats on the same day allowing about 30 minutes dry time in between. If you put some on and let them sit overnight, the next coats will bubble.

            In fairness, mine were only cracked on the outside. The inner tunnels were still in good shape. I masked the openings and the vacuum ports, and just applied it to the outside. If they were cracked on the inside I think I would have bought new ones.

                Mine were cracked, but not too bad. all I did was cleaned them up to remove grease, oil and dirt, then coated the cracks with black RTV silicone. You can defiantly tell that it is there, but that doesn't really matter to me at this time. the bike needs a lot more TLC to look good.

                  I also tried 2-3 coats of the spray-on rubber tool handle coating. It did make a good film, but when cracks began to form near the carb hose-style clamps, it just lacked the strength when wrestling on the carb bank.
                  Anyway, the new ones are done and they made a BIG difference. Good luck!
