I am a (old school ) and am still having a tough time with this conversion stuff.
    Here is my dilema.
    I have a 82 xj 1100 maxum with a 19litre(5 gallon)tank.
I have been reading on the site of how many miles to the gallon every one is getting.
How about us guys and dolls in Canada eh!
How many kilometers do you get to a tank?
The reason being that when my fuel gauge gets down to 1 bar I
still have 9 liters left.I am also using Shell v-power 91.
Also how much fuel does the reserve tank hold.
What happens when you run out of fuel(reserve as well).
When you fuel up do you turn off the pet cocks, how does the reserve fill up.
These may be silly questions, but I am going for a road trip and I would kinda like to know these things.

Hit reserve on my 79 special today. 178 kms ridden and put back 12.5 litres in a 15 litre tank. I'm assuming my reserve is about 3 litres.

When you run out of reserve...the bike shuts down...no fuel...no go.

The petcocks generally work on the regular supply tube being higher then the reserve. Its all one compartment but when the fuel gets below the main supply tube the bike will sputter letting you know fuel is low and allowing you to find a gas station by switching to reserve.

I have always relied on my odometer to tell me when I need fuel and not a gauge. Still use tripmeters in my cages and know roughly when I need to fill up. Every bike will use a little more of less then another one based on the tune of the bike and the way it is ridden.

      Sandy,

Based on my fuel mileage for my trip to XS East in May, my XJ1100 will go close to 300 kms per tank. I never went that far before looking for fuel for fear of running out. There is no separate tank for reserve fuel just a port lower in the tank that fuel flows through when the petcocks are switched to reserve. I have run my bike down to where the fuel light is on and I have had to switch to reserve but I do not remember how many liters it took to fill the tank.

      Hope this helps,
      Paul

I am not getting very good milage.
When I had to change the emulsion tubes(brass)they had a lot more holes than the originals.I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
I am going to fill up to-day and go by the odometer.
        I will keep you posted

          Hi Sandy,
Where are you going? I bet your bum won't go 300km without a break anyway so what is the problem
          I know mine won't

            stats

I was getting about 40 mpg Canadian before my coil upgrade and I suspect I'm doing better now.
The XJ tank has a 19 litre (4.18 imperial gal ,5.02 US gal ) capacity with a
            4.1 litre (0.9 imperial gal, 1.09 US gal ) reserve .

Blue giant explained how it works , no turning of the petcocks is necesary to fill reserve .

My XJ goes onto reserve when it hits one bar .I have never seen the warning light come on . I imagine this is not accurate and can be different for each bike .

            40 mpg imperial = 33 mpg US or 14 km/litre or 7 litres/100 km

I have been getting about 250 km before reserve approx.

When it runs out of fuel in the main tank it starts to miss and spit and fart and then I turn the petcocks to reserve or prime . It takes a bit of time to return to normal once the carbs have been starved so I usually turn to reserve as soon (or sooner) as this starts .
Last fill-up from when it went on reserve was 18.869 litres on the reciept . I like shell V-power too (watch your paint) !

I have switched over to the 850 final drive and upgraded my coils as well. I get about 300 km per tank at 120 - 130 average speed with hard luggage - usually full and only in Michigan. I still seem to average about 34 to 38 mpg though with a rare visit over 40 if I keep the speed down to about 80 on the smaller highways in Canada. I keep to the cheap gas, never noticed any improvement in economy with the better stuff. I do toss in some seafoam though and it seems to clean her out well and she runs much better for a while.

                  Seafoam

Cleans out your fuel system when running or long term soaking for tough gummed up carbs . I use it for fuel stabilizer over Winter . Carbs come out squeeky clean in Spring .

                    Thx for the help.
There is a Napa store on the way to work.

                    Does Crappy Tire have it?

Our Napa here definatly has it but I have not seen it in Crappy tire at all. However every store has some differences so you may get it there. Seafoam goes for under $7.00 here.
