  • XJ carbs

    hey folks.

I've spent a good chunk of the day going through my buddy's XJ1100 carbs... apparently some crud found its way into the bowls, and it was time for inline filters.

first, I just like to note that the Octopus is a great big pain in the arse. Why would it be located in such a way that gas had to go upstream? ...and the petcocks sit so low that you hardly have any room to maneuver with the fuel lines.

anyway, I cleaned up the carbs, colortuned them to a nice Bunsen blue color, but the bike pops a little on decel. it seems like I have to set the pilots almost to yellow flame to avoid the popping. I checked intake and exhaust for leaks, and haven't found any.

    Any ideas?

Could maybe throttle shaft seals be a potential problem on a bike with 22K miles?..

I think you've found the right spot. These bikes seem to like it where it's just almost to the yellow like you stated. A bit rich is to their liking.
As far as the seals... it isn't so much the miles, as the almost 27 years that has gone by.

Now... you never mentioned synchronizing. It's a good idea to do after you've been into the carbs. It's a good idea if you HAVEN'T been into the carbs! lol. But with the XJ, you'll need that YICS tool to block off the ports to individualize the carbs.

      Thanks, Tod!

The bike was synced recently, but not after the most recent meddling... I used the homebrew YICS tool that I got for the 750... I believe it's a "genuine replica" of a Norm Kokes v1.3

I'll check the sync again and maybe look into getting a set of new seals...

        Hey Stereo,

It could be the seals, but could just be synch and needing to be a little richer?? Take a bic grill lighter, and squeeze it just enough to get the butane flowing, but not all the way to hit the CLICK to actually cause it to light, and have the bike running, and poke it around the shaft seals and listen for any change in engine rpm. IF you don't hear any changes, then the seals are probably still okay, why spend $ you don't have to. JAT! BTW you didn't mention whether your friends bike had any aftermarket intake/exhaust mods....especially exhaust....4-1 pipes do tend to cause decel popping even when tuned right!

TopCat, the intake/exhaust is all stock... And I'll check the seals with a lighter or some starting fluid before diving into that job.
