  • OK This is wierd!

So I'm goofing around with the horns cuz they suck and I get them put back together and they still suck. Oh well, time for new ones.

Then I go to start the bike and it won't. Turns over but no fire.
Eventually it starts and I think "Must of been no fuel in the carbs from removing the tank or something".

    Shut it down and restart...OK.

I go to ride to work and put it in nuetral with it on the side stand and no fire again. Pull in the clutch...it fires. Let out the clutch...it dies.

Put the side stand up, in neutral..it fires with the clutch in or out.

Put the side stand down, clutch out...no fire.
Side stand down, clutch in...it fires!

So, is it the clutch switch, the neutral switch in the tranny, or the side stand switch? This multi-switch interactivity confuddles me! By the way, the neutral light works ok. (does that mean the neutral switch in the tranny is ok?)

Little help please, today was a beautiful day for a ride! Had to drive the cage, didn't want to risk it dying on the freeway!

Sidestand switch, designed to prevent you from starting it with the sidestand down and then taking off with it still down when you put it in gear. However it gets flaky, and most XJ folks just wire ALL three wires that go to the sidestand together and this will bypass/fool it, so that you can start the bike and allow it to warmup/idle while on the sidestand, just remember to put it up before you take off, because it will no longer kill the engine when you put it in gear with the stand down! You don't want to go doing a "John"!

      Well here's the wierd part...

If I hold the bike upright and in neutral with the side stand up, it will start and run. As soon as I put the sidestand down it dies BUT...if I hold the clutch lever in and do the same, it keeps running. With the side stand down and the bike running, if I let the clutch out it dies. So it seems that the switches are working, just not like they are supposed to.

I'd like to keep it stock for stock's sakeand for resale value.

      Whaddya think?

Good Luck trying to keep it OEM!

Just checked BikeBandit, and they show it in their Electrical 2 diagram, but NOT in their listing, so it's most likely discontinued from Yamaha! Here's the part # if you want to TRY to find one!

PS., unless the buyer is some kind of prude or such, having the switch or not shouldn't affect the resale, these things aren't 57 chevy!

Check to make sure it is the three wire switch that you need. The switch could also be loose were it attaches to the frame.
