    Hey Dog,

There isn't enough room to get a wrench around the cam sprocket bolts when they are rotated downward, so that's why you loosen the upper one when at "C" and then rotate to expose the other bolt, but once you have both bolts off so you can remove the sprockets from the cams, you do NOT want to turn the engine/crank.

That's why you THEN remove the cam bearing caps and remove the cams, to release the tension being put on at least one of the valves on each cam. Once the cams are out, you can then rotate the engine/crank without worrying about the pistons hitting any valves, since there are NO cam lobes pushing any valves downward towards the pistons.

Remove the head, do what you need to, then reposition the crank at TDC, put the head back on, put the cams in with the DOTS up, put the chain on the sprockets and position the sprockets to get the 1st cam sprocket bolt in place. Once it's tightened, you can then safely turn the crank with the cams to position the OTHER cam sprocket bolt hole!

Since doing my adjustment, I have notice an odd ring sound that isn't very loud and is only there when the engine is not yet at operating temp. It's only noticeable when I accelerate, only when the bike is 'warming up'. What do yo suppose that could be?

I noticed the timing cover and in fact the parts right underneath it all have a pretty good resonance on mine.. the cover you can ring like a bell.

Not sure what could be doin that in there but listen around that area mabye a noise from other part of the motor could be making that resonate although It shouldnt make too much noise while its hooked to the engine with a gasket dampening it. Just a suggestion.

It really isn't that bad. I just notice it when I accelerate. It is louder the harder I accelerate, but probably only noticeable to the person driving. Once the bike is hot it doesn't make the noise. My bike has only 34000 miles on it. I shouldn't need a camchain replacement, right?

                cam chain life

I'm setting at 78,000, and just getting ready to replace my cam chain. and I'm scared to death. I've put the last 66,000 on it. LOL. Later 'Dog

I also own an xs650. I have been told that these bikes are just noisy. That is how they are built and how they were back in the 70s. I really wish I could hear a bike that is in tip top shape to know what it should sound like. I have been thinking I need a camchain replacement but now I don't think so since I have half the miles of the typical camchain replacement.
