    Sleeper

Hey Snowdog, that can truly be called a "sleeper".....since a bed mattress can fit in the back............Did you get your kit from JTR also? I miss the trips to Home Depot in the S10....The look on the face of the guy in the 5.O when I left him at the light with a load of 2x4's in my rear bed....I miss her.....

Love it. Bet it sounds cool, too.

I love to run around in my 95 Camaro Z28, ground effects, new LT-1, 350 HP, 6-speed, SLP short-shift, shorty headers, 3" exhaust, nice, deep sound, blacked-out windows, rear window spoiler, chrome wheels, more. 12.8 second 1/4 mile.

I'm kinda soft on the list until the price estimate comes in. MikesXS 5th gear overdrive is 59 buckers for one...so maybe around $120 to $150 for two

Here is a link showing comparison and installation of the single MikesXS gear. Please note I'm not just trying to push a point just to push a point. You guys know much more about this topic than I could hope. I just wanted y'all to see that somehow it's been done with one gear replaced. This weekend I'm installing another one.

Definitely doable in the winter months! Price is good. If we had a couple of us do two or three at the same time, we could learn from each other and avoid mistakes.

What are your final results in 5th? I'm surprised that the same diameter gear, even with more or less teeth, would make a significant difference. Do the teeth mesh OK? How about grinding?

I used to be a motorcycle mechanic at the local Yamaha shop, so I can handle this without any difficulty, but it's not something I would go into blindly. I would like to know if there are any caveats or "gotchas" that you need to know ahead of time.

The only way to really do it is have different diameters

Different diameters makes sense to me. If the cases are apart anyway, why not reduce the diameter on one shaft gear and make up the difference on the other gear on the other shaft?

I would like to know that the mod works flawlessly before ripping my tranny apart.

If a couple or few of us could get together and do 2 or 3 bikes at once, we would have the method perfected (at least after the first one).

Also, there should be enough difference in the final rpm's to make it worthwhile.

                    Just my two cents...

Yeah... but I want 'em both! (The gear AND the final drive together) I wanna cruise at 100 at @ 5k rpm! lol..
I was actually checking this while riding this last weekend. My bike is already doing just a little over 90mph at 5k rpm. I'm also well under redline... @ 7500 rpm at 135mph. So... there's really not much more I could expect from a gear swap that I don't already get from just the final drive swap.

BUT... I am interested to see how this turns out.

                        Reason Being

The real kicker for the swap would be keeping the xs11 FD for killer take-offs and have the top-end low RPM's for commuting, long hauls. Although I personally believe (others have agreed) that 1st gear with the 750 FD is better because it doesn't wind out too quickly and gear changes are easier....

I have been debating whether or not to keep my xs11 due to the fact that the mileage isn't all that much better than my car, and because the seat and gas tank aren't that comfortable. If I can find a way to increase my mileage into the 40s I would reconsider selling the bike. I have heard different things about the FD mod. I am kinda waiting for the new site to go up so I can see the pics that come with the mod instructions. This fifth gear mod sounds like a great idea, but ultimately seems like it will be way more work and money.

I agree. I get about 28 to 33 mpg with my Hyundai Elantra, which is good for work, rainy days, and carrying all my work stuff, and about 33 with my XS, so the bike is just for pleasure, for me.

If this gear mod is too much work, it isn't worth going through for just a few mpg. If the mpg goes way up, then it can happen. Also, if gas goes up to $10 per gallon, anything is possible.

Hey guys been out of town since last week.
I see we got 8 now. I'll be calling this guy tomorrow like I was supposed to last week.

Still waiting on my TCI so I havn't been able to test 4th gear to 5th gear rpm difference. And we want to try cruzing at 50mph in 4th to see how its going to be. If were at 3k at 70mph then thats going to work out to around 2k at 60. We won't be able to shift to 5th untill 55mph witch will be the absolute lowest rpm we want to ride at 1750. So between 50 and 60 mph is the problem spot.
What rpm do we turn in 4th at 55mph?

Forgive me for my iggerents, but I gotta ask....

I'm a newbie to the XS1100 world, have a 1980 XS1100G with the Yamaha fairing and bags that look like the 81 Venturer. Until this year I've been riding Ventures and Royal Star Ventures and doing a lot of cross-country trips. I no longer have those bikes due to circumstances, and my XS is all I got now. I find I am liking it the more I ride it (and...well...I own it too!).

I haven't had much of a chance to ride it, but the riding I've done, mostly mixed riding involved with getting used to the bike and fixing various issues with it, has netted me 34.1 mpg. When I ride the interstate at 65 mph, the RPMs are between 3000 and 3500. At 55 mph it's 2500 rpms. It seems to run fairly smoothly.

What I am reading here is confusing me a bit. Firstly, mine seems to come on-the-pipe a hair above 3000 rpm, which seems low by what you guys are saying. And your goals for cruising rpms I've already met.

Does this possibly mean a PO had already done this mod? Or is it more likely the tach is off?

On the flip side, in comparison to my Ventures, low-end startup torque from a stop requires more throttle input to get it going than the Ventures. I stall it occasionally because I'm used to the low-end grunt of my old Ventures. Is this normal?
