After 15 years, sometime in March, 2010, AT&T Worldnet will be shutting down Personal Web Pages and eliminating Worldnet email addresses. The show is coming to a close and the fat lady is getting ready to sing. What a long, strange trip it's been.
Since I won't have a ISP-supplied website I've temporarily moved the 1980 XS1100G schematic to my User ID in the Member Photos area until I can find a long-term email and web solution.
I am going to miss Worldnet.
Regards,
Scott

Yes. In the factory schematic there are Brown and Chocolate wires. It looks like Clymer's calls them Tan and Brown, respectively. Maybe it was just easier to write チョコレート(Chocolate) in Japanese than 暗褐色 (Dark Brown).
It looks like I have the turn signal wire colors crossed, thanks for flagging that. I'll pull the seat, have a look and fix the file.
On the future projects side: I have a 1979 XS1100F parts bike now so I'll be able to make a schematic for it now that I have a harness I can compare to the factory schematic.

Scott

Steve, I'll tear it down and start checking wires sometime next week but right now it looks like I'm in a self-inflicted revision limbo. I hate it when I do stuff like that. The mixed up wires and colors were what prompted me to make my own schematic in the first place.
I made the final schematic using three files: a front, middle, and rear portion of the schematic to get the details and colors. I made multiple backups after each change, then merged the three when I thought they were completed. It looks like I merged one old, incorrect, file with the corrected finals.
Back to the drawing board!

Scott

Thanks, found the diagram and it should help me figure out why my auto cancel is not working, I suspect that have a ground on a line where I shouldn't and I have to find it and fix it. Should be an easy fix if I'm right after looking at the schematic. If it works, I'll post the tech tip for the mod I showed you after I've finished testing it and then we can let the games begin.
And again, it was nice meeting with you. Hope to see you when you get into the area again and we can have a chance to get out for a ride.

thanx from me too scott,
i just bought a 80g and that diagram has helped

Hi Scott,
nice work.
For your next task, I'd like to see a component diagram.
One that in addition to the wires, showed all those mystery modules in their proper places on the bike, what they actually looked like and said WTF they all did.
A case in point, that diode thing in a plastic sleeve buried in the loom under the tank, who'd know that lil' bastard was hidden in there unless they'd been told?

Pete: I'm glad the electrolysis post and the schematic helped you! I made the schematic from the harness I had in my hand for my U.S. '80G model but you might need to make a few minor changes like reversing the turn signal wires/colors for antipodean operation.
Fred: Unraveling component layout and making a legible schematic for each one was something I started to do but I gave it up as an exercise in futility because the equivalent circuit schematics in the Yamaha manual(s) are better for troubleshooting.
The mysterious black boxes potted in epoxy have to be destroyed to see what's inside of them. I don't have enough spares to do that and I'm pretty sure I would lose the will to live if I tried to do all of them.
The resistor color codes, component part numbers and other markings in the few failed parts that I have manage to disassemble without destroying were either badly discolored by heat/age or they were totally obliterated by removing them from the epoxy. Some of them can be read by looking at their reversed part number paint left on the epoxy after you remove it but you have to get a chunk of epoxy to break in just the right way without shattering or you have to try to put it back together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Some non-potted parts like the tachometer circuit board use proprietary components made for and apparently sold only to Yamaha so an O.E.M. schematic wouldn't really do any good. There are other components that can be substituted to make an equivalent circuit but that goes beyond the scope of most schematics and my XS keeps finding far more common and mundane ways to try to kill me than death by tachometer or self-canceling turn signal failure.
