  • wiseco 1197 kit in a 82 xj1100

hello, need to know with how much success, has anyone installed an 1197 kit in an xj i have been told that using a xs kit would lower the compression because of the difference in the heads.my source was dynoman who was looking to get every ounce of horsepower for comp tractor pulls if the effect is ill have more horsepower than stock then im interested in the conversion. any advice or personal experience is welcomed including the cheapest place to buy the kit. thanks RJS

Hi, I have installed a 1197 kit into a 1980 XS1100. This should have given lower compression, as the 1980 supposedly has bigger combustion chambers. However after the installation, the motor has 165 PSI compression, which works out to 10.25 to 1. Which is as advertised by the Wiseco site. The motor has a lot more power than before.

Yes, the Wiseco pistons are slightly less domed than the stock XJ pistons, but you are taking nearly 25cc's per cylinder and cramming that into basically the same area as before.

So yes, it will increase your compression... just maybe not QUITE as much as the 78-79 models, and yes, it will improve your HP.

          1197 kit in a xj

thanks for the input,i needed a first hand account before i installed the kit. in reference to the pulling tractor, dynoman is a website that sells wiseco kits i talked to the general manager buzz who laid some very specific info on me about how they built a xj motor back in the 80s for a guy who did competition pulling this motor ran at 10,000 rpms custom made pistons and valves i dont remember all the specifics but he sent me pictures it was pretty cool. he said they tried the wiseco pistons and put it on a dyno but could not achieve the horsepower that they later did with the custom made pistons. the tractor was unbeatable that year . rjs

If you're looking for more... read the stuff from Dan Hodges on here... Here's a link to one of them.
