  • Fitting R1 brakes

    Howdy all, Mr XS has CBR 600 Calipers & an RGV 250 M/Cylinder(Front). Im wanting to upgrade these to R1 front stoppers.Has anyone done this? Im thinking early R1, shouldnt be overbraked as the XS weighs about 80 kg more than an R1.Any thoughts?

        I am sure some folks will want to know where you got the spokes from.

          should go for the yzf600r 97-07 model. they stopped faster than the r1 and it was a heavier bike. it was the fastest stopping production bike for a while. i think one other one made before it stopped a little quicker but it wasn't being made at the time the thundercat was made. and i think maybe one more modern bike finally beat the cat out. if you look up motorcycle consumer news stats for 07 or 06??? it has the beaking test at 108 feet i tihnk??? i forgot. i used to know those kinds of things.... should be able to get the calipers cheap.

                Hi Chrisso,

                The interest is not about the rims, or even the front hub, but which REAR hub has been used to do the conversion..... there are VERY few known ways to do it!

                There are a few bikes on the UK site with R1 brakes, and my own bike has FZR brakes; directly interchangeable with the R1s....

                Miti's bike;

                My bike; complete with FZR forks and discs;

                These brakes need the "usual" 5/8" (16mm) master cylinder used on almost all twin-disc bikes, instead of the 11/16" unique to the XS11.

                    Hi Chop,

                    I have an AMAZING supplier, with a big range of metric fine bolts; been using him regular since the '80s and I am still impressed. However, you need to remember that I am in UK, so I don't know if he does international shipping?

                    He is HERE!
                    Check out his narrow hose clips (Ideal for carb/filter clamps!) the "R" clips, the flanged nuts.........

                      from U.K.

                      That's the only place I could find them, not even in Germany! I will double check the length for my Busa front caliper bolts and get 4 sets, thanks for the link....chop

                        Hi Chop,

                        Let us know how you get on with him; I have found both the quality of his hardware and his service faultless...... although he is not the cheapest......

                        The site is well worth a good look through; I find more to interest me each time I look. I could spend my wages in there easily!

                          Hi Chrisso,

                          I have just had another look back at your bike pics; I guess that the CBR calipers are "single sided"?..... One of our members tried to fit R1 calipers with a spoke wheel and (even with wider yokes/trees) did not have clearance.

                          The R1 calipers are as bulky on the inside of the disc as the outside......... I cannot imagine that you will have clearance.

                          If you want some sizes, I should be able to find them; I have done the measurements before.

                            New Rotor Source

                            Pipeline project coming soon......I have a source for the new style WAVE rotors that I can machine to match the XS650, 750/850, and the XS11. I will be matching them up to the big 6-pot Busa calipers to fit the XS11 standard forks/wheels....real bolt-on stopping power....chop

                              Hi Chop,

                              Sounds good, and it will look amazing.

                              However, even my FZR brakes proved to be more than enough until I fitted road-race tyres (Metzler Comp K). I now have enough tyre grip to be able to use the brakes hard.

                              I would have thought that waves and six-pots might be a bit much for the Standard XS fork?
