  • I did the 750FD swap today. Put off my 300k trip until tomorrow so I can see the improvement.

I do like the 750 FD, the bike is a lot quieter.

Also, changed the oil, filter, etc. But forgot to check my air filter.

Did notice I have worn out my rear tire, and rear brakes already. Just put new ones on last summer.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

    • 400km road trip today.

Put on the stock exhaust, much quieter, and has xover, but I have a leak I will have to track down.

      First leg, 198km (123 miles) @ 75-80mph.

      29.2mpg US, 35.1 imp

      Second leg 117kms (72.7 miles) @ 70mph

      34mpg US, 40.8mpg imp

Derwat got 36.7mpg US, 44.1mpg imp on this leg.

Haven't filled up after the last 90kms or so.

Was getting more burnt oil smell, but only used 150ml on the 200km leg. I used a 20W-50 semi-synthetic, as it was the only 20-50 I could find.

      • Those numbers don't sound bad....last time I check I was getting about 37 mpg(imp). Don't know what it is right know, my lawnmower was out of gas and so was my jerry can so I had to borrow some from the xs.

Are you still suffering from lack of top end?

        • Well, it's a lot better than the 17-25 I started with!

I think there is more there, though. The bike was running a bit WORSE because I put the 750FD and stock exhaust back on. Now my mains should be a little rich and I still have the 45 pilots in there.

Once the new PJs come in I will se the carbs back to spec and go from there.

            • Finally got a good check on mine, 400km trip this weekend, 45.8 mpg (imp) 38.2 mpg us. That's running back roads around 100-110 km/h (60 mph+\-) with the odd 60km/h (36mph) zones thrown in for good measure. (140 mains with 4 into1)

My old '79 with 81 carbs only used to get me about 30-32 mph (imperial) or 160km a tank (including reserve).

              • Did another couple checks. 152kms of 50/50 highway and in-town, 29.5mpg US, 35.1 imp

                172kms highway @ 120kph (74mph) 34.6mpgUS, 41.5mpg imp.

The pilot jets haven't arrived yet. I did get teh exhaust leak(s) solved.

The bike is now so quiet, I can hear every noise in the valvetrain!

I also go the bad heli-coil out, and put in the right one, so now have all 4 matching plugs.

Did a quick paint job on the old sidecovers so that they are the same color as the rest of the bike. The new ones didn't fit quite right, and the locking tab on the left one was broken so it liked to flap in the breeze.

                • I am glad to see that you didn't give up and set that thing on fire. We have had a couple of six day rides but I am finding that the poor mileage that I get with the 11 is hurting. With the two bikes it sure ain't cheap.

                  • I was having the same problem.

When the car gets better mileage than the bike, it becomes difficult to justify taking the bike places, especially when the car has a stereo, AC and 3 cupholders!

We are finding out a lot about the tune/economy relationship here. I am hoping to find out how we can all get close to the EPA mileage ratings through some experimentation.

When I first got this bike on the road I got 17mpg(imp). Now I am routinely over 40mpg on the highway.

Still have a ways to go to get to the 53mpg(imp) it is rated at, but that's the fun of it.

Ride non-stop at 70kmh for 200 km in 20 C weather (slightly overcast) no luggage, your jacket freshly armoralled and your helmet waxed (full face, visor down) and you might see 53mpg

BTW the Vetter's seem to amplify the top end noise.

Even the big windshield I bought does that.

                        • I've got a small shield and it does it.

I think its more to do with reducing the "wind" noise one would normally hear, allowing the top end noise to be heard instead.

                          • I find it amplifies all sorts of wierd noises. More when heading aginst the wind, less when riding out of the wind.

Put the 42.5 pilots in, with 110 mains. Left the needles one notch lean. Checked the diaphragms.

Low end came back, mid ok, but no screaming, lost more high end. Can barely hit 7500 in 3rd now. Will check teh plugs and oil tomorrow, when it's light.

Went 300kms, first leg slightly uphill 149kms, 11.2 litres, 31mpg US, 37.3mpg imp.

                            Return trip 147kms 9.59litres, 36mpg US, 43.2mpg imp.

Runs great up to about 80mph. not much for power above that. 5th gear will lose speed on hills.

Were you running on middle notch before? Would try middle notch again...seems to make a huge difference going up or down one notch with the middle (stock position) being the choice one.

40+ mpg (imp) at 120kph isn't all that bad...I notice a big disparity in mileage between 100kph and 120kph no matter what I'm driving. I bet if you're able to achieve 40+ at 120 then its likely you'll see 45+ at 100 kph (60mph).

BTW did you ever check your crankcase vent?

                              • I thought I would try the needles where they were, just to see.

Since my needles are .5mm shorter than anyone elses, and there may be a small amount of wear I thought it may work set one spot lean. I also live at ~3,500ft.

Derwat is running his one spot lean, right now, and it seems to run great. However, I am waiting for a plug check on his after a few miles.

When I first moved my needles down, it helped, but that was with the 45 pilot jets.

No, I haven't checked that dang vent, leep forgetting!
