  • Went another 200kms, yesterday, avg'd 29.4mpg (US).

Buddy was in a bit of a hurry, we were 75+ most of the time.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

    • I've ordered some 42.5 pilot jets. When they come will see how they affect the system.

My stock exhaust should be on by then.

      • Use any oil on that last run?

        • Actually, that is about normall for that speed. There is quite a bit of difference between the 42.5 and 45 pilots in the low end rpms (all else being equal to a stock carb set-up). I also found that oil usage at high speed can be higher than normal and I once used a quart between fill-ups with the dreaded synthetic Mobil-1; however, oil usage is now completely acceptable with dinosaur blend. I would recommend that you get that sparkplug hole rethreaded if you haven't already. It is really pretty simple.

          • It's not a matter of just rethreading the hole. I already did that, unfortunately I put in the wrong heli-coil!

I have to get the old heli-coil out then put the right one in....

            • Oh crap! By wrong, I suppose you mean it fits a different spark plug thread. I would live with it as long as it sparks and does not leak hot gases. I'll bet every spark plug will have different heat ranges. I am sure you know all of that by now...

              • Right now I have a BP7ES stuck in there.

The other 3 have Bosch Platinum.

The coil in there is a 3/4" trhread, rather than the usual 14mm.

I understand some mfgs still make 3/4" thread plugs, but I would have to find what the xover plug is.

BTW I used ~1 liter of oil last 300kms.

                • I was just reading through the posts and your problem is similar to my own. My 78E was stored for a dozen years and when I revived it it never had the same old power. I had replaced the old rotted mufflers with slip ons and no crossover. last week I had a muffler shop install a crossover just behind the center stand and it really woke the bike up. More power, about 38 MPG and smother operation. I would recommend anyone with slip ons add a cross over.

                  • I have a set of stock pipes that I cut off and because of the diameter of the slip-ons, I also lost the crosover. I would really like to see the work that the shop did!

                    • I have a stock exhaust coming, with crossover.

I hope it will help too.

                      • The crossover is just plain aluminized pipe and will probably rust with age. I was lucky and had about 2" of good pipe on each headed after they joined. The crossover is about 8" long on each side and built in 2 pieces for ease of installation and future removal. The guy has done this before and made all the cuts for the crossover by hand with his torch and then welded them to the 8" extension.

My 78 had a definite stumble at about 3200 RPM and near 7000. all that is gone now and more power everywhere. My exhaust had a crack to it before and now is a much deeper rumble. All is good. I'll try and get some pictures when I return from my trip.

                        • Took another gas run today.

Ran 35mpg (US), (42.1mpg imp), and about 1/2 liter of oil in 175kms (107miles)

This was staying at ~70-75mph as much as possible, about 90deg F outside.

Seems to be getting better the more you ride, and the warmer it is out?

I don't get out as much as I want, but for mine I know she needs to be runned to stay running.

                            • I use mine daily. I've hit 35mpg(US) twice, both times running between 110-115kph, or 42-4500rpm steady.

If I go up to 4500-5000rpm, the mileage drops 3-4mpg.

Still waiting for the 42.5 pilot jets to show up. Want to see if they make a difference.

                              • I am getting about the same mileage. And mine is the same if I twist the throttle it drops quick. I love the bike but traveling with two bikes and getting that poor a mileage is not great. Just got home from another trip to the coast. Hit a pothole so hard in Quebec that the left caliper bolt snapped. I now need a few parts I jury rigged it to get home but the bolt is wrong and the keeper on the top off the pads is missing as well as I will need the spacer on the bottom. It was a big darn hole.
