  • New MikesXS coils

TopCat; I've a question about the installation. I'm lookin' at your pictorial~~and see that the coil(s)' two primary wire attachments show one: "+" , and one: "-" (one positive and one negative). I haven't looked at the old coils to see if they have the same indication (I'm guessing that they don't). If they do, then my question is answered; if they don't, the question: (?) which of the two color coded primary wires go to the plus or minus? Or does it matter? I have two schematics~~one in color~~they're no help at all.

Coils on the way from MikesXS, as of two hours ago. And I've got two partial boxes of the yellow 8mm Accel wires, that I've had for some years, that I'd gotten for my '78 - 454 - Suburban, that I bought in '77, that I still have.

The postive wire will connect to the red/white wire, it comes from the TCI, and the negatives will connect to the gray and the orange wire. Those two lead to the P/U coils.

        Mikes XS coils

Just installed MikesXS coils on my XJ . Took about 3 hours of leasurely work . I added covered solderless connectors instead of the ones sent . I used vaseline instead of copper conductive grease on each end of each secondary wire and a bit on each primary connection. I sealed the coil caps with some black RTV and all other connections with di-electric grease . Spark plug caps are new from last year . Had to toss the trim bracket (wasnt in use)
Bikes starts better . Runs better . I think the gas mileage is better . Its all good for about $75 .
My old coils were still ok and I may try the wire replacement mods in the future . It was the wires that were breaking down after 25 years . Imagine !!

i will do this swap soon as well... the only thing i am wondering about is i had a camaro that i used the universal 7mm accell yellow wires on and it ran a little funny for a while and i noticed one night with the hood up i was getting purple discharge from the wires hitting the manifold! so i went to 8mm wires from accell with no problems. i also had a msd 2 blastercoil i think it put out 45,000 volts??? so would 7mm be ok for the mikes coils or should they be 8mm?

Yep; mine starts better, too. Have 71 miles on it since the change; haven't filled up to check, yet. Had gotten 23-26 mpg before. Seems to run along at 50-55 with less throttle, and does have better "throttle response". Yeah, it does have a bit better power.

My old coils were oil damp, about half way up the sides~~front and back and side(s) of each coil. (not engine oil). Not saturated, not dripping~~but, yes, discolored with "oil dampness appearance". (?) Coil secondary wires were in bad shape.

And~~you'll note~~on earlier posts of this thread, PO had replaced the RH coil with a 1.5ohm coil; still running the original 3.0ohm on LH~~no ballast resistor. And, earlier this year (I had made mention on another thread), I had discovered that PO had converted the 4R0 tci box to 2H7 box and had changed the pickup coil plate that would have the 2H7 advance behind it.

                    I have a xs1100 SF..

do these plug and play, or would I need to fabricate a bracket? I read here that you need 7mm plug wires and caps and can omit the crappy frame mounted resistor.

Mine bolted right to the stock mounts. They are 90deg rotated, but this caused no issues.

Took me about 20 minutes to install them.

                      I have an 80 standard.

                        details

Mine mounted the same as stock with the omission of the black plastic trim (guard ) bracket . You can use 8mm or 7mm wires . On 78 to 80 you omit the resistor . 81 and up doesnt use one .
2 coils are $64 in MikesXS.com site . That included shipping for me From Florida to Ontario , Canada with no duty charges (USPS).

I too have new coils (Dynas) and would be interested to know if people thought that their bikes were running OK prior to installing new coils and what they thought after.

                          I. personally, thought my bike was going reasonably well. After the new coils I was blown away by how much better it was.

I am sure there are heaps of owners who are missing out on the most effective mod of them all.

Be nice to hear others before and after experiences.

I had an improvement for sure but less than I thought I would get . To qualify , for a quick job I used 7mm wire and re-used the resistor caps but I wanted to get a set of 8mm copper core with normal 90 degree conectors . At this point I have resistor plugs and may not have the full effect .
This said , I have better throttle response , better starting and improved gas mileage . I think my original coils were quite ok but I had some spark plug wire deterioration and had to often adress that ( cutting shorter ).
My bike is running well . Regular color-tuning and synching(Morgan) has raised the bar and theres only so much the coils can do.
Through this site I have been able to achieve new levels of tuning perfection all the time . Its been great .

Close. and dang sure ain't plug an' play if it's done proper.

THE MOSTEST NUMERO UNO EFFECTIVE mod of them all is the TKat Fork Brace! Number one! #1! ........and, it really is plug and play.

When I see a spit-shined, spit-polished, modded up XS11 that's obviously had some money and time put into it~~first thing I look at is the forks. If there's no fork brace (preferably the TKat job) there~~what does that tell me about the owner!? duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Both of the above mods are so important, that after they're done, the rider will actually be excited at the results.
