How do you know when your front fork is going bad? Does it just stay in one position? And if it is how do you fix it?

I've never heard of a fork going bad, unless it was bent. I've put seals in some honda forks and they are kinda simple, not sure what could go wrong to make them "bad". Are you having a problem?1979 xs1100 Special -

If you are talking about moving the front wheel from side to side then yes you are looking for a place or places that it kind of hangs up. This happens when the bearings in the steering head are worn. To check keep the front wheel off the ground and slowly move the bars back and forth also get in front of that bike and grab the bottom of the forks and see if you can shake them back and forth. If you can then the bearings are loose and need to be tightened. Do not over tighten then as this is what wears them out ( wheelies also are hard on them). After they are tight check again for binding.http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1241/1480921818_241eade448_s.jpg
