  • Frame Reinforcement

This morning I cut the templates for the steel that I will need to reinforce the hop-up bike's frame. Any input / suggestions are welcome. I have tried to keep this as simple as possible. I'm guessing that 1/8 inch plate will do the job?
    Here's a pile of photos ....

Hey olebiker ... this is the frame for the 78 XS1100F hop-up bike with the chain drive kit and many other goodies from 1179 kit to full high performance brakes. It's the frame that will receive the engine I recently finished closing up

          I don't know

How you manage to get anything done at all with such a clean and organized man cave. Got "maid service" there?

No maid round here, built in or otherwise. I actually have such a small amount of floor space here that I have no choice but to keep after it. In these photos the other 2 bikes are outside in the lane way.

A custom alloy frame would be nice in deed but would be way to costly for me on this project. It also would take away from the appearance of the bike being an XS11. I do not want to change the overall appearance too much.

                        Hi XS11SF,

Looks good!..... quite similar to the European Sport model. I have just recently picked up a spare frame to do something similar with.

I was also going to add an extra tube across the front rails, above the upper front engine mounts and just under the top bend in the headers, and a diagonal between that and the original tube for the lower front mount, to make a "Z" brace structure.

I was also hoping to build a similar "Z" in the rear of the engine cradle, with the mount tube at the front of the battery as the lower leg of the "Z".... I won't be using the original airbox. I will probably use a horizontal tube across the top of the swing-arm pivots (front to rear?) where you have plate; not 'cos it will work better, but just 'cos it looks great below the side panels.

Are you going to put holes in the head braces to alow for access to the coil mounts, or are the coils moving?

                        Great work Rob!

Hey Allen, I would also use tubing but I have been told but the lad that will do the welding that the pieces must be ZERO tolerance fit to do a proper job. That being said I do not have the equipment here to cut and fit zero tolerance tubing. That's why it is all plate / gussets. I was also going to do more around the engine in areas you are talking about but figure it will not be necessary given that the engine mounts are solid. As for coil mount location it is stock and thats why the cut out for the tank mount point is so big. It also gives access to the raer coil mount bolt and there's a hole big enough for a socket that lines up with the coil forward mount bolt. I am most concerned with the head and swing arm areas but must not interfere with access and wiring placement. I will post some pics once it is all wielded up and painted. I still have some "real" fine adjustments to do to my templates as well.

                            send in the reinforcements

Hey rob, don't forget that you will have to notch the lower frame tube to pivot point for your chain clearance, it looks like that one front reinforcement will be in the way. I just used a 3/16 thick plate (1"x4" ) bridged from the edge of the pivot bolt housing to the lower frame tube....Looking good, What color will you paint it?
