What ever you do don't touch the brakes. As the bike slows the effect of the flat tire will get worse and worse. At some point you will be going from lock to lock trying to stay upright. If you are very lucky and don't panic and nothing is coming you may ride it out. If you try slowing down fast you will crash, ( don't even down shift) just pull in the clutch and let it come to a stop on it's own. It really is quite scary. Good luck I've been broke too and had to ride what I had.

Asking what tire is best is opening a big ole can of worms.
I do understand being on a tight budget but you really shouldn't ride the bike until you get a decent tire on it. I put a new rear tire on mine just recently for a total of $87. It is a maxxis promax. It was $50 for the tire and $37 for installation at a local yamaha dealer here. I saved $30 in installation by removing the wheel myself. You really need to check around though, had a couple places quote me almost $200. It is also a good time to grease the drive shaft while you have the wheel off. It probably isn't the best tire but I did put 6000 miles on another one with no problems.

Well.... I started checking prices out... The labor they tell me at local Yamaha will be 67 dollars.... My front tire was recently replaced with Dunlop 404 tire.... They tell me that I have to match the front tire... Is that true?

How hard is it to remove the wheel?

I don't see that it would matter that much if they matched. Most people prefer it that way but I can't see it being necessary. Removing the rear tire is easy with basic tools. I would suggest that you invest in a clymers manual as well. Lots of good info in there. That price is about right if you ride the bike in and they have to remove and install the wheel. Ask them for a price if you just bring in the wheel. It knocked off $30 here on the labor.

Dude, you dont have to match tires. You are close to me. Ride to L'ville and see what IM runnin. I have virtually NO budget so Im a good example for you. I WONT run baldeenies no matter what the reason. As careful as you are, all it takes is one oops or one dumba$$ cager to ruin your day, or your life.

By the way...the labor charge for the dealer? Forget that, man. I'll show you how to change your tires on your own in 30 minutes. I've done it. My last tire change took a bit longer because it was a tire that wasnt designed for my rim. I invested $10 into having it balanced so I knew it would ride well and wear evenly. Other than that, I paid $65 for a used tire, dismounted and mounted it myself, then paid $10 for balance. $75 and Im running a $160 piece of rubber, man.

In the heat around ATL, I wouldnt run a baldy for money. The road surface here can COOK a bald tire in no time. The heat generated by running a baldy on these roads in the heat of the day can cause instantanious explosive failure. Pardon me for saying, but if you ride that and dont replace, you're one crazy SOB....I mean with all due respect, but riding that way is plain stupid. I understand the budget. I understand only having ONE means to travel around with. I am IN that boat, friend. My XS is all I have here in GA. Therefore, I treat it well as I can afford to. Right now, that means keeping gas in it and wiping the paint down once a week. If my tire were bald...either one...I'd be walking. Sorry to beat a dead horse but get yourself fresh rubber. You'll be amazed at how she handles with new sneakers.

PM me if you want. we can get together and go over some stuff, and maybe find you a good tire at a reasonable price. There are wayyyy too many shops around our area that will sell you a GOOD used for cheap.

If you ride it around with no skin, eventually you'll end up with no skin...get it?

Ya, those nosey cops...why should they care if hundreds of pounds of motorcycle is heading out of control towards a family on the sidewalk?

Don't exaggerate. I am a pretty skilled driver and that is the main factor that matters in a crash situation. I assure you there are so many riders out there that are more dangerous than me due to their basic stupidity and lack of skill, that my bold back tire should be of little or no concern to the police.

This is just as scary as the spark plug gap guy!

Did you really need to ask Were you looking for some one to approve and say, its fine keep riding?

Let some dew fall on the lines on the road and you hit them at just the right angle and see how much you need tread on your tires.

But then again, some people are serious adrenalin junkies, and love riding near death.
