  • Back tire worn out... worn out?

    I just wanted to ask you, seasoned xs11 enthusiasts, should I change my back tire? It has no thread left on it but still rides fine and doesn't bother me....

    If there is no tread left it is definately time to replace it. If you get caught in the rain, you'll wish you had tread because that is what displaces the water to keep your tire in contact with the road.

    Remember, the tires are the only thing keeping you attached to the road. Lose the traction, lose the game...

      only if you like:

      keeping the "shiny" side up

      Your skin attached to your body

      avoiding doctors and hospitals

      being able to continue ridding


      really though, if they have no tread at all then the slightest thing could mean you loose traction. Ever ride in the rain, or even after its done raining when the roads are wet? Ever seen some sand on the road? I wouldn't risk it, tires aren't that expensive.

        So, it's time to change it..... Yeah, I have noticed that after the rain, when the roads are slippery, I kinda start slipping....


        So, what do you think is it going to cost? And where can this be done? Yamaha dealership?

          cost ya about 100 bucks +/- for the tire plus whatever the shop charges for mounting and balancing. Around here thats about 15 - 20 per tire. Any dealer should be able to do it for you, although they may charge a bit more. You can also look in the phone book and call some smaller independent shop, they might give you a little better price.

          You could also buy the tire online and then mount it yourself. If you search this site or the net for motorcycle tire mounting you should get plenty of hits with instructions and how- to's.

            Generally, if you take the wheel off the bike and take it in to the shop you get a better price, less labor for the shop.

              There are wear indicators on the tires... little lines that go across the tread. When the wear gets to these... is supposed to be the time to change them. Several people have commented on tires being made of a different compound once you get past those indicators and wearing VERY fast after that. Like the last 2/10's of a tire lasting 1000 miles.. and the final 2/10's after the indicator only lasting a couple hundred.

              Not all tires I'm sure... It does help to when your tires get really thin to check the air in them. You know it's in there because you can see it!


              Asking how much a tire will be is like asking how much a shirt costs.... Depends on the tire. Do a search for tires and you'll have weeks of reading material to make your decision on...

                If the rubber gets thin enough you could have the kind of tire failure that you might find hard to ride through. At least it is your back tire if it really blows out you might be able to ride it out if you don't panic and know what to do. If not then you will crash. I have had two tires suddenly go completely flat and I hope I never have another.

                    Last 2/10ths before the wear indicators.... compared to the 2/10ths that's left past the wear indicators.

                      I was lookin' at the air in my tire...do you need special glasses or somethin' cause I kept lookin' and I couldn't see it very well at all.
                      By the way...what am I lookin' for? Is it a special color..or thicker or somethin' ? Is there a thread that shows the process? How many miles 'till I need to replace it?

                      Dang, I ran out...where can I get some that looks right? Is one brand better than another?

                        Well... My tire has NO thread left whatsoever...I mean none... It's nice and shiny.... I will figure it out within a couple of weeks... meanwhile i just have to ride like the rest of the bikers in my area ... slow down and make an important face....

                            I dont want to sound like an a-- But dude if you have no tread DONT RIDE!!!! And if you think its ok to ride with no tread then I will stay a long way away from you. Just buy a tire and be safe. If you dont care about yourself think about who you may hurt if it blows
