  • HELP!!!!!! Rear Axle Binding.

So in an effort to get the rear wheel reinstalled on my project bike so I can reinstall the engine I ran into a big problem. The rear axle will not slide through the rear wheel assembly with out binding. After a lot of messing around and a lot of cursing I've found it to be binding in the brake caliper bracket. The bracket will not sit flush and square on the spacer that sits against the wheel bearing and seal. It's like the spacer is too thick, the rotor does not sit out from the wheel far enough or the rotor diameter is too large. I double checked the bearing to make sure it was seated home in the wheel hub and it is, the snap ring is seated as well. This is the only spacer I can find in my parts bin with the rest of the parts I removed when I disassembled the wheel for paint and polish.

Does any one have a picture of this set up on a 79 standard?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Thanks Doug, but thats the same parts breakdown and picture as in my manual. My Bike came with several boxes of extra parts and I think I may have the wrong spacer in there but I can't be sure nor can I find a different one in the boxes.

        Hey Paul,

Does the caliper slide over the disc rotor when it's NOT in the swingarm?? Have you tried spreading the pads of the caliper apart a little to make more room? Also, you might try removing the caliper from the holder so you can mount the wheel/tire and caliper bracket without the caliper on it, might give you more wiggle room?? Are you sure you have the wheel and it's splines fully seated against the Final Drive assembly?? I've had to rotate mine a bit to get it to slide further onto the final drive shaft before I had room to put on the brake caliper holder!?

          pictures, Paul...

Take a picture of the set up as it is on the bike now and post it.
That will make it easier to see what's up.
I'm sure these guys can tell you the problem if they see it.
I have extra stuff from my 79 that I could send that may be of help.
Had a catastophe here at home and need to get rid of parts, I think...Might be able to help...Let me know...

Thanks Carolyn, T.C. and Ernie. I have tried to test fit it all on the bench with no caliper in the bracket. I'll snap some pics tonite and see if i can get them to post.

Are all the rotors the same size and offset?

I'll try and post a better description later on as well.

As far as I know the rotors shuold be okay. Double check the torsion plate. It has a standoff at the front with a rubber bushing. If thats not set up right it might cause some binding issues.

On mine I put the spacer back on the rim, slighty compressed the piston back into the caliper with a pair of c clamps to give my pads clearance, swung the caliper down over the rotor, set the torsion plate on the front stand off and swung it down to match the caliper and the axle slide right through.

Like I was always told, never force it, use a bigger hammer.

                  Mystery Solved!

So last night during our power failure I wonder out to the garage and snap some pics of my wheel, spacer, caliper bracket and axle so I can post them here and hopefully get some answers. Still no power this morning, so I come into work early, shower and shave and hopefuly load the pictures so someone can understand what my problem is.

As I'm responding to an email from a friend it hits me like a freight train.

My basket case bike came with a 16" rear wheel and I'm trying to install a 17"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I seem to recall a thread about such a conversion and I do a search and I check the Yamaha parts catalogue and sure enough I need a different spacer!

                  DUH!!!!!!!!!!

                  Thanks new found email friend!

I thought you said the bike was a standard? The 17" is for a standard and the 16" for a special. But you're right, there are different pieces on the right side depending on the wheel.

It is a standard Ernie, not sure why it had a 16" rear wheel on it but that's not the only special parts that were on it.

I'm sure this bike could tell stories! Good stories! I think it's led an interesting life so far.

I'm thinking I should be able to machine this spacer down to the correct thickness if I can find that measurement.
