  • XJ1100 front caliper rebuild kit

I think i might have found a possible solution to finding a rebuild kit for the XJ1100 front calipers.

I have my leftover front pistons from my '78 cb750F which measured 1.500" in diameter. the XJ's pistons are 1.500" too.

height isn't a big deal as the CB was 1.375" and XJ was 1.440". i noticed the XJ also took the squarish type o-ring seal, so did my CB.

the one on the left is the CB and XJ on the right. don't worry about the dado on the CB piston. it's for the rubber skirt that keeps debris out.

so, i guess i'll be ordering a set of CB750F front caliper rebuild kits and see it the XJ calipers will accept them.

actually, this would be just as easy if someone could measure a XS piston and see if it is the same size.

now i'm stuck on the rear master cylinder rebuild kit. does anyone have a real picture of the kit? i have the schematics but that is not enough. if yamaha didn't do this dang linked braking system, we wouldn't be stuck with a larger M.C. piston. i'm sure there is something put there.

now i know bikebandit sells the kit for $50ish but that's extortion when you can get a front for $20.

The actual pistons can be reused most of the time. Scuff the rust off with some emory cloth then follow with a fine wet sand paper and oil. make sure you use some brake cleaner to remove all the metal flecks and oil before installing.

The actual rebuild kit for the XJ with the O-rings and stuff can be had at Partsnmore.com for $14.. but there's a $35 minimum order.

i've looked on partsnmore, z1, and crc and all have rebuild kits for the rear but not the front unless other year XS have the same calipers as the XJ.

Sorry... I thought that's what you were asking about.

I checked the XS parts list and it doesn't show a part number for the piston like the XJ does.... you can see in the pic what I am talking about.

BUT... it does have one of these... makes ya wonder what all comes in a Breed Screw kit???

            lol

I'm trying to check out what other master cylinder kits may work for the rear. it's a .75" bore so there has to be something out there that'll work.

There are at least 2, maybe 3, versions of the front caliper pistons. Stadards and Specials use different pistons; I think the XJ uses the Special pistons.

Had a conversation with Tkat at the Yosemite rally about this; he makes a set of 3 replacment pistons for $80.00, IIRC, but needs to know if they are for a standard or special.

As for the rear XJ master cylinder, I used a standard XS kit when I did mine several years ago. The linked braking is an add-on to the master cylinder, not integrated into it. Only difference is the XJ uses a fluid level sensor in the MC, so there is a bit more to disassembly / reassembly than on the XS. I bought a small syringe to make refilling the MC easier once it was back on the bike.

i just got my rebuild kits in for my front and rear MC's. front was good but i took jerry's addvice and got a standard XS rear reabuild and it turns out it's for a 1/2" bore. i guess since other XS models rear MC was just for the rear brake, they only used 1/2" instead of 3/4" bore MC's.

so, if anyone wants a rear MC rebuild kit for their XS, I can let it go for $20 and I'll pay for shipping.

so I'm still stuck on finding a rear MC rebuild kit.

                thanks

I am deeply sorry if my information / memory was incorrect. I did my rear MC back in 1999, could have sworn I had no problems with the rebuild kit.

Factory part number for the trbuild kit is 10M-W0042-00-00, and I think it is still available from Yamaha. I looked it up on the Zanotti Motor on-line parts page, price was about $35.00 not including shipping.

nah, it's cool. called my local yamaha dealer and they said yamaha discontinued the rebuild kits for the rear on the 82 XJ.

a little pondering and call to NAPA, they said they carried 3/4" cups for the rebuild. for $1.75 i picked this guy up.

it's solid unlike the donut cups. i was thinking about hacksawing the boss that goes through the donut. the only reason that boss is there is for the spring to push against. i figure i'd shim the spring where it seats against the wall the same length as the boss to bring it back. wadaya think?

I've looked at the XJ1100 and XJ750 Seca front calipers side by side.. Can't tell any difference. Actually, both calipers off the Seca would fit on the XJ. The bolt pattern is the same. Piston and pads are the same, as well.
