  • need to borrow a sync tool in SE MI

    Hello,
I recently did a carb cleaning and float sync an am waiting on a n idle set screw from another generous XS member (thanks again Dustin) from MO. I have read the post explaining how to build my owne carb sync tool and will probably do so. I was hoping to do it later than sooner. I'm wondering if anyone in Wayne, Westland or Ypsilanti MI would be willing to share a carb sync device and any wisdome with me. Please respond here or send private message to proctor1. Thanks D Proctor.

      tune up

      Thanks Ross,
Im going to put together a sync tool with the vac guage to get her running for now. I wouldnt mind making a run to your neck of the woods in the next few weeks to check out the notorius color tune. I'll let you know how my tuneup goes. I have to remove the tip of an idle set screw before proceding. I plan to use the sewing machine needle method. If you have any suggestions I'm open to advice. Thanks again, Proctor

        just some suggestions...

hey there proctor1....just wanna point out a couple things....first, you gotta use 4 gauges to get it right...one or two gauges will not do the trick....adjustment to one carb will affect the other.....so on and so forth....as far as advice on removing the needle screw point, i can only offer up a couple cold ones, herbal therapy, a random hail mary, a hammer (for distance targeting), and last, but not least, a stick of tnt if ya can't get it out....have never done it and don't want to....follow the advice of the forum and you should be very good....let me know when u wanna do it and will try my best to be available....weekends only so far, but work is not steady and could possibly do a week day....let me know what ya got in mind and will let ya know what is available....here's to meeting ya soon and turning up the "pucker factor"......ross

I am planning to use a single guage with the 4 hoses out of the aquarium splitter (with shutoffs). I read it was best to use a single guage for consistancy in measuring vaccume. You know something I dont ?

Is the colortune a replacement for carb sync tool or an enhancement ? In other words "Can I sync the carbs with the colortune apara ..apparatu.. F*#@ (you know what I mean?".

Dad and I have the same machines and he mentioned possibly buying one (a colortune). How much are thy and where is the best place to buy one ?

Thanks and look forward to a ride wit ya. Proctor

Nope, color-tune is setting idle mixture same on all carbs, sync is setting butterfly openings same at idle. Both make engine smooth at idle and low riding rpm's. Once you twist it wide open accelerating, neither one of those two perfect settings make any difference to performance under WOT, contrary to what some think. Float level settings being IDENTICAL and correct jetting for your normal riding location(elevation) will result in the best all-around performance and mileage. "bread-tie" method will suffice till your able to hook up a set of merc sticks and set all carbs dead on. If ya got a good ear for setting idle mixture, color-tune is good for those that have a thing for "nick-nacs" and just like to tinker insted of ride. Have experimented with different main jet choices and such and have found on my factory original Venturer that stock jetting, even at 5,000ft. elev. is dead-on correct, exact same float settings on all four carbs(2mm lower than stock sea-level setting) has it silky smooth from idle all the way to redline, 41mpg@65mph. Me thinks that is the best I can expect from a factory full dresser. Keep it simple, if it's not broke, don't fix it.
81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

                  just my 2 cents....

hey there proctor1....a single gauge setup will not work....i did just what you are describing and could not get to come close....best i can tell is to go to harbor freight, get 4 vacuum gauges.....to calibrate them, hook each one up to the #3 cylinder and take a measurement...if each gauge reads the same, fine...if not record which ones are off and how much....take this difference into consideration when adjusting the settings.......then when you are done, just return the gauges for your money back...as far as colortune goes and where 2 get one, here's where mine came from...

i know there is another manufacturer out there, but this is the one i have and used on my bike.....hope this helps and if you want, we can get 2gether and you are welcome to use mine if ya want....hope this helps....ross

                        sorry, been distracted.....

hey there folks...sorry but have been distracted downtown....

                        http://www.starsandstripesfest.com/

anywho, FSCGunslinger....i believe so, but ya might wanna check.....btw, very nice handle and location you have there......you have my salute......

proctor1....ya missed a very good concert tonite.....see above line...as far as getting 2gether, let me know what your schedule looks like for this weekend if ya want....as far as you questions....(d*mn you, i got 2 cats!!).....just kidding...you need the gauges first then you need 2 colortune it....then recheck it with the gauges....

lets put it this way...you pay a "cover charge" to get into the strip club...that is you rebuilding the carbs....ya might have 2 go back to the atm for some more money a couple times, but it is worth it....

then you finally find the girl that is right for you....ya know the kind (i won't go any further!)....that is you syncing the carbs up with the gauges.....close, but not quite there.......

finally, you hit the VIP area and have the stripper of your dreams....that, along with a good ear is what colortune helps with.....it is not syncing nor is it the "stupid-proof" tool....

i got mine from a member here online that did not want it.....some like it, some don't.....all i know it gave a visual indicator along with the indication from the engine....

i hope this puts everything more in persective.......sorry but i can't supply pictures to show you the progression of what i mentioned....well gotta fly for now....rest up for 2morrow....more concerts 2 survive....ross
