  • Oil change

Well I feel I have a duty to post this,, even though it has been probably posted before.
It was sometime in the middle of winter when I decided to change my oil with filter after work. I bought some on ebay a lot of five, pretty cheap. I thought I got a deal, but as I found out it didn't come with an "O" ring for either the filter cover or the oil cover bolt. I looked at it and thought It was still good enough.
Wrong. I knew I had an oil leak that got progressively worse. I thought it was the valve cover or the cam tensioning gasket that was leaking. But after cleaning it after two days; after riding it through mud and rock roads and almost constant rain...
I have concluded that the O ring on the oil filter cover was leaking. I had on it at least an 1\8 inch of baked on mud, oil, and road grime on the cover.
Believe it or not there is some kind of back air flow that the oil can travel up the block and spread on the head.

So I guess that the moral of the story is don't be a tight wad and get the oil filter with both the oil filter O ring along with the little one on the bolt.

It took me longer to clean the oil filter housing than It did to clean the whole freaking bike.
Ride safe and keep the rubber side down.
If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself..

I think I've only ever bought one oil filter that came with an o-ring. None of the genuine Yamaha filters came with o-rings, and let me tell you, they weren't cheap.

I've had good luck making my own o-rings when I needed one. I buy a ring of the correct thickness, but a larger diameter, from an industrial supply shop. I cut it, set it into the groove of the filter cover, and trim again for length. Then I use a wee dab of a special cyanoacrylate glue made especially for rubber to join the cut ends, still using the filter cover groove for alignment.

Fram CH6002 filter comes with the o-rings for the cup and also the center bolt. Fram is all I ever use now.

Oh yeah, as always we must repeat, dont forget to retrieve the metal washer that usually sticks to the bottom of the old filter.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

CarQuest filters come w/ both o-rings. You can get the small o-rings at hardware store, doesn't have to be metric. Big ones at bearings supply.

I'm with Tadracer on this. My local auto store doesn't stock them, but can order them. At $3.99 each with the O-rings.... Fram is tough to beat.

Does anyone know where a magnetic drain plug can be found? I usually stick a round flat microwave magnet in the bottom of the oil pan, but forgot this time, and I don't want to pull the pan since it doesn't leak a drop.. lol. .

I figure if Fram didn't do it's job, they wouldn't still be in business so long no matter how cheap they were. Wix is a good filter that has the gaskets last time I got one... but it's double the price. Their filter number is Wix 24933.

There is a guy on ebay who always has the magnetic plugs. Seems to have worked fine. I use the NAPA/Wix filters with o-rings.

                    oil filter thread

I recommend against using the STP oil filter. I used one once and when it was time to replace it, it broke into little pieces. Very brittle! You can imagine what that could do to an engine if it did it on its own!
