  • 80mph+ vibration

ok so i have some ideas of what maybe would be causing the vibration but wanted to run it by you guys first.

so at 80mph and up there is a vibration in the front, kinda like hitting alot of big bumps in the road and it is continueous...... my thoughts are the brakes dragging(I have the rebuild kits) or the wheel is un balanced.

    what do you think

    vibration

I'd bet on unbalanced wheel. Mine did the same, had the wheel balanced, smooth up to 110.

i have been wanting to go up higher but the vibration just keeps me from getting there. the fastest i have gone on it was 100 but i backed off because of the vibration. it has alot left in it

      I will check that out.

        vibration

Yeah, I'd think that if the brakes were at fault, it would do it at lower speeds too.

I had a fairly severe vibration last year. Turned out to be tightness in the rear U joint. It was't loose at all, just was a little tight moving it one way, and normal moving it on the other axis. replaced the U joint with a spare I had, and vibration was gone. I tend to agree with some of the other comments that the wheel could be out of balance. Maybe also a warped brake rotor.

I have had a seperated front tire before. It acted a lot like it was out of balance in the early stages. As it got worse it became more pronounced at lower speeds. We were out on a Santa toy run. We were 50 miles from home when it finally kicked in to a full wobble. The tire was looking like it was swaying up front. All the guys stayed with me while we rode about 20 mph to home. I appreciated every one of them (metric and harley riders) staying with me till I was oughta danger. Just a thought that your vibration may be a tire seperating on you. I am sure the Guru's have better Ideas but I would check that possibility as well.

well, i belive then i will be taking the wheel off and having it balanced and the tire checked out, and while i am at it its time for breaks. if the tire is bad i will do the XJ wheel and rotor swap sooner than later with the caliper rebuilds and the pads. although the guy i bought my bike from said that the front tire was new, but how new i do not know. its the dunlop tire that is ever so popular.

Yea sounds like a balance issue. If he changed it himself there is a good posibility that he didn't line the dot on the tire up with the valvestem. The dot dignifies the lightes part on the tire and the part of the rim with the valve stem is heaviest. Or atleast you better hope thats all it is. If it was a sticking/warped rotor then you would think it would just pull that way, not vibrate.
