23 and 26 are the correct ones. Also need gaskets for both sides and oil pan gasket or you could make your own.
I did 2nd gear on my xj after purchasing it that way and would not discourage anyone from doing it.
My first time in a motorcycle transmission and I had no problems just following the step by step procedures listed on this site. I replaced the gears even though it cost more but gave me piece of mind. All the parts can be ordered from any Yamaha dealer.
If you like the rest of the bike, go for it.

I paid just over $400.00 for mine and only had to clean the carbs.

problem there is, I have searched thousands of adds across the U.S. and this is the best price on this type of bike in this condition(with in reasonable distance). I have only 4 bikes found in this price range. This xs1100, a 82 gpz1100, 82 GS850, 85 650 savage. the xs is best all around. The gpz is the fastest of the bunch. The suzuki's are nice but slowest, and least desirable.
The xs is the cheapest too. The rest are 900-1k.
How long ago did you buy yours? The value of all motor cycles are going up daily now gas is over 4$ a gallon, and 138 a barrel on oil and no sign of relief.
Don't be suprised if no bike is sold under 1k running before too long.
I spend 600$ a month in gas for work. I can cut that and the bike pays for it self in 1.5 months 2 max.
850 for me is a steal. As long as the gear problem is easy, and seems to be.

You got a real deal if you got a garaged xs running for 400 bucks. Look at what they go for now. I see a lot at 2k or even more. Price is determined by demand. Bikes are in more demand now. Like oil. Price goes up.

6 hours is a long way for a bike like that. You will probably be better off just to keep looking and find one closer to you.

Great post, more good info, thanks. I love the way it looks, and the reviews I read are great. I was a big fan of the GPZ's untill now. A few less horses but definably the best looking bike of its day. It does run so I can test drive it. Just have to skip 2nd.

I think that is a good deal. Prices are always higher during riding season. More than likely the guy will take less than that anyway. It's a good deal if you want the bike which it sounds like you do. I say call him and tell him that's a long way to drive and ask if he'll work with you on the price.

I did find others but north of DC is 10 hrs+
I went to cleveland OH to get my 300zxTT

I'll try some more craigs list searches in Tenn and Va.

Once I get there I might haggle a little. Since it does have a bad gear in it.

6hrs and 11 min. 150 more$ same milage, and 2 years older. 80 or above only because they fixed the twist from the drive shaft that year.

It just goes to show, all the last bikes posted are 1k-1500. And people are telling me 850 isn't good?

I am still looking though. Never know what can be found. If nothing comes up from now to wednesday.

search torque reaction.

Its the force generated by the twist of a drive shaft. in 80 they countered it so you can't feel it under hard acceleration. And they made the motor torque backward instead of forward. Putting more weight to the rear tire.

From 78-82, (Sorry... and 83 and 84 for the Canadians..) ALL the motors spun backwards. All the drivetrains, from the cranks to the main drive chain, to the gears, to the middle drives, to the drive shafts and out to the final drives are all the same and interchangeable for all years.


You'll get the same reaction from all the driveshafts in all the models... and you are cropping out the 78 and 79's which were the fastest models.

According to these guys there was a change in 80. Or that was my understanding. Just repeating what I found on searches. More info the better. Thanks

The 78's and 79's had smaller valves but more compression and hotter cams. The 80's and above had larger valves, but less compression. They made up some of the compression with a higher domed piston, but it didn't make it all back. later, the XJ uses a YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System) so a tube was added to the top of the cylinders to incorporate this.

Basically from the bottom of the cylinders down and out to the back wheel are the same.

Some things did change ON the motors, but the guts are all the same. The only thing I can think of that may have stopped the shaft chine action.... is a little less power?

The average person will never feel anything from the driveshaft. The only time I have ever noticed it is sometimes in a wheelie, it will pull the bike to the right some. Both tires on the ground... you'll never know anything about it.
