  • Looking to Buy, Is this good?

    Hello,

I am looking at buying this Xs11 for 850$. He tels me every thing is great but 2nd gear pops out. All other gears are good. Garage kept and started regularly while stored. Says it starts right up. I am 6 hours away and need to be sure this is a good deal. And need to be reletivly sure of the fix as this will be a daily commuter.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Dave

    I'd think so...

if everything else is good on it... looks really nice...

The 2nd gear is a common problem with these and easily fixed...

It's got such a vast number of non-original
parts that I don't think anything over $500. is worth it.

The vast number of non origonal parts are labled as follows,

1980 Yamaha XS 1100 custom street bike. Custom bobber seat, phantom passenger pad, custom Harley Davidson rear fender, Kawasaki springs, and many other extras. Looks and runs great real head turner! 38k miles and many more to add to it

I don't see the many extras as a bad thing but quite the opposite. All my toys are modded up.

It boils down to, if you like it, then get it.
You're the one that has to live with it.
          Have fun.

Well I like the looks (obviously) But the real question was about the 2nd gear thing. So far sounds like a fairly easy thing to fix. But one opinion and one how-to on that so far.

But the feed back on the 2nd gear thing will determine if I continue to like it and pursue the purchase.

I am very mechanically inclined. So buy and fix, or seek elsewhere.

I will get a local mechanics opinion too. But would like more from actual owners.

            Thanks for the input

The second gear fix is fairly easy, especially if your mechanically inclined and with Ken's step by step instructions. I wouldn't shy away because of it.

                tranny

If you're mechanically inclined, tearing into the tranny of this bike isn't too bad. The gears can be accessed thru the oil pan and splitting the cases is not necessary. You have the option of buying new gears (still available), or re-surfacing your gears. There is also a simple modification you can do while you're in there to prevent 2nd gear from failing prematurely again.

                  Thanks,
Where are the gears available? New or used?
I read the entire dremmel how-to. I would probably get new gears and do the fix to prevent it from happening again.
Do you have a link to a site that sells the gears? Or should I just search?
                  Thanks again

As I recall the gears needed to fix it properly are about 600.00 and the Dremel fix is about 50.00, I did the dremel fix it was easy I would rather do the dremel and get it right then count on Yamaha trying to get it right again.

                        gears

The gears available from Yamaha now are back-cut already, no need to back-cut the new gears. To fix 2nd gear problem you will need 2 gears (countershaft 2nd and 5th).

That's a bit steep you can find a better deal sooner or later . Offer him no more than $500.00 . If there was no issuse with the second gear than I would go for it at that price. Just my two cents.

I paid just over $400.00 for mine and only had to clean the carbs.
