lean??

so I set my floats at 25.7mm and checked the needles and they are set to run richer with the clips down 1 slot mains are 142.5 pilots 42.5 bike starts with ruff idle and proceeds to creep up to 4k rpm throttle cable is free I know I need to sync but do I need to go up a main jet size to get rid of this symptom???

I did a pre sync by lining up the butterflys covering 1/2 of the top holes

We're going to need more info, what else has been done to the bike? Things such as exhaust - stock, 4 to 2 or 4 to 1? Intake, pod filters, stock airbox, stock air filter or after market (KN) air filter.

The rough idle is most likely because you haven't synched the carbs yet.

Are you using the choke? If it creeps up to 4k with the choke on then all is well, thats about what mine idles at with the choke on.

If your not using the choke then can you adjust the idle down using the big idle adjustment screw between carbs 2&3 on the back (air filter) side of the carbs?

Check your sync with carb sticks or guages before changing jets. You might be allright just the way it is. I've experimented with the different needle clip positions, and i found that the middle setting (recommended) always works the best.

I have pods and a 4-1 and I would very much recommend the 'formula' in the tech tips. It basically recommends 2 sizes up for 4-1, 2 sizes up for pods, and if the increase totals more that 3 sizes up, you subtract 1 size off the main and go up 1 size in pilot. So, for you and me, that works out to 3 sizes up on the main, and 1 size up for the pilot.

Using that formula it would suggest 145 main (137.5 stock) and 47.5 pilots (45.0 stock) buttttttt, your needle is adjusted down one so, try syncing it and running the way it is.

The only real formula is trial(t) + error(f) = success

where t is the number of trials and f is the number of errors

so is this a sign of running lean or what??? I just ordered 45s and 50s and I have 3 sizes of pilots do you think I should jet up and put the needles back to stock??

These are the gauges I use to sync. carbs. Much more convienent than the sticks, IMHO.

My guage kit came with all 4 gauges mounted in a nice metal holder (not shown in pic).

I bought a set of thse a couple of years ago, and in my opinon they are junk! After the first use, the needles would not zero out, and I couldn't adjust the gauge face enough to zero them. They only went back to about 5 inches of mercury. I have a good quality vacuum gauge that I use at work, so I brought it home, and using T fittings I was able to hookup to each cylinder, and by using the dampers to control which cylinder I was reading I was able to dial my carbs in much better than if I was using the four gauge set.

I would sync first and see how it runs. If it runs good do a chop test and see how the plugs look at the higher rpms. The plugs will tell all.

I use the single gauge method with the aquarium manifold,it works pretty good but I think my gauge is going. My local Princess Auto sells single gauges for like $6.95 (they are the smaller ones designed to be mounted on machinery) and was thinking of making a four gauge unit out of them. I haven't seen any dampers though. Do you know a good method of making a damper for each gauge?
(My single gauge I just use a pvc plenum to damp it.)

Mikes sells a pretty fair set of gauges for $59 seems to work well, good dampening.

I have read here that you can use an old pilot jet and just stick it in the hose. The small orifice will dampen the pulses.
