  • Fun with carbs...

Still getting the carbs figured out.

I have everything running smooth. GOt the new manometer and checked my synch job. I had them pretty close using the 2 guage method.

I have the idle mixtures as close as I can get, using a tach.

The bike runs smooth, starts right up cold or hot, little cranking if it's 3/4 warm.

    Fuel mileage is getting better.

Only issue now is it seems to lay down in the high rpm. If I run it to 8,000rpm it will pull ok in 1st and 2nd, 3rd it takes a little longer, 4th would take a while and I doubt it can get to 8,000 in 5th.

I am wondering if my S&S pipes would be making it require a rejet. They are full length, but straight through. Everything else is stock. I have a K&N airfilter, but did not drill the airbox.

I find the bike lacks power until about 3500rpm then it realy takes off until 6,000-7,000ish then it just doesn't pull as hard.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

    Hey Craz,

Have you checked the compression lately?

May want to check plugs to see how mixture is at upper revs. I'm sure there are lots of nice straight stretches out your way where you can wind it up, hit kill switch, coast to a stop and check plugs.

The S&S may be causing a slight lean condition, I think the 80's were running 110 mains. Your plugs will tell you.

Yes, I was thinking of doing that, it's just such a PITA to get the plugs out with the lowers on!

Take the lowers off. It's only 4 screws per and a bunjee, isn't it?

Aren't you running a Vetter? All of the ones I seen have the blind nuts made from rubber? I actually found some at a local Home Hardware store, they even had two different sizes!

It may be worth converting if you can. My lowers come off and on continually, pulling carbs, checking plugs and on the real hot days.

Define a really hot day...would that be around 100F? Like it gets around here? Today is mid 90's.

Up here we don't have that many, probably more days in the 70's then above 80. Over 80 considered hot here after everybody is done b**^%&n about the cold, they turn right around and say is it hot enough for you? Duma%%$s

I would love it to hit 100 and if it did I would definitely have the lowers off (no oil cooler)

Myself I consider it hot when the air blowing in my face is warmer then the air coming off the motor.

my bagger has the lowers also, and while they are a godsend in the cold, well, cold to the locals here (40 F), they are nothing more than a toaster oven in the wrm weather. I took them off weeks ago.

I have the rubber blind nuts as well, but let's just say that original Yamaha (Vetter) lowers are getting to be too valuable to trust them to the nuts alone, so mine have a 2nd stainless nut inside the fairing.

I can take them off and leave them off, for a while, just while I get it set up, I just like them on.

It can get to 80 or 90 here in the daytime, easily, and get down close to freezing at night.

I did buy some of the vetter windshield vents for hot days, but I haven't drilled the holes for them yet.
