  • Got it running....Kinda

Ok so I go to pulling the left side cover off and the bolt was just in there not threaded so I went to the store and bought a new one, because the old one, the first few threads where toast. I got home went to put the bolt in and it wouldn't cetch the threads so I took the timing plate (don't know technical name yet) off and the pin that spins what looks like the rotor? Then I put it back in, threw that plate on and bolted it on. It will only run on choke and i jumped the solinoid right to the starter and it will run choked and rev right up etc... BUT only with the starter engaged. The second you take the jumper off it dies. unchoked it will only back fire. So my question is how do I time it without a hanes manual? I'm in the process of getting a shop manual and wanna get it so it will atleast idle on its own.

Could this be caused by it needing to be rewired? I'm almost positive its because the timing but just a thought.

    Thanks in advanced.

P.S. with only 3 headers and the other cylinder with no pipe (due to it being bent during unloading by a friend...) It sound ANIMAL.

Just got done reading about replaceing coil pickup wires so the thing under the plate is the coil pick-up? so the gap is between the metal stick lookin thing with the mark on it and the cover plate thing that actually tpins that little rotar thing? So does the cover have to be in order for proper vacume to run? because i was running it with it on.

wait is all I have to do is set the gap .7mm?? and is the gap from the thing that little pin spins to the edge of one of those black pick-ups, or to the edge of that metal stick thing with the groove on it? I'll take pics tomorrow if someone doesn't know what I'm trying to say.

sry to post agian on the same tread but I was reading on this post http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...ht=coil+pickup and someone mentions the ballast resistor and it only running with the starter engaged. Where might I find this because those are the exact symptoms of my bike. Also how do I hook this up and where? would it be on a wiring diagram because i dled the manual and the last few pages are diagrams.

I don't know what you are working with but 81's and newer don't have ballast resistors. You will find it just under the tank on the left side. It is shaped like a woman's thumb. You could bipass it (disconnect wires and hook them together, or just jumper across them if you can) just for the sake of diagnostics, but I wouldn't run it that way for long. It is hard on the ignition components.

I wont I just want to hear it idle on it's own without the starter engaged. I'm gona rewire it after I graduate on wed next week. Need a front tire anyway its so weather cracked I cant get the beed to pop on, so I wont be driving it.

Those aren't like doing tune ups on the point gaps for older cars. They should need no adjustin' unless somone has messed with them (maybe you?)

Yes and no. The kid i boght it from let the hex head bolt come out and it rounded the end of the bolt off so i bought a new one and it wouldn't go in so I took the plate off and the pin that spins the unit was inside the hole where the bolt goes so i put it back and put it back together but I marked where the plate was so it's in the same spot where it was but i dont know if the rotor lookin thing that spins was in the right spot but I already know what it is. Its the ballast resistor. Thanks a ton though.

I've got the same problem. Where do I start to find a useable ballast resistor?

                    where to get one:
                    ebay?
                    yamaha?
post in the parts wanted section
pm member adreasweiss and ask him if hes got one (hes on vacation right now)
buy 3.0 ohm coils to replace your 30 year old stock ones and leave the resistor off. See the many threads about coil upgrades for this one.

If it were me I'd buy the new coils and leave the resistor out.
