Custom Exhaust Question

I was just thinking of how cool it would be to make a Quad exhaust for my SG. My question is would it work if each cylinder had its own pipe?

Yes, it will work. Will it work as well as stock or a 4 into 1 header, NO. The only time it will work well is if you have a "blown" engine, and are pushing air into the chambers all the time.

How did Honda do it for so long with the normally asperated fours of the 70's? So many of those bikes had 4-4 exhaust back then.

Probably those big ole megaphones had something to do with holding back pressure and thus allowed for some low RPM tunability.

Straight pipes will work just fine as long as you are trying to do most of your work at high-RPM, WOT. Aside from that they will operate like C$@p. You can actually get much better performance from a well tuned header.

DiverRay, TADracer, I have to disagree! I have built 4-1, 4-2, and 4-4 exhaust on a number of XS1100's, and as long as the carbs are properly tuned, they all have worked fine, at all RPM ranges. Granted the 4-1 does work best, but even the 4-4 is a very workable set-up for the XS. Just my thoughts on the matter, for what it's worth.

Would a 4 into 4 need new jets? if so what size? I'm really looking to get a sound close to my dads softail, lowend tourqe dosen't really matter too much to me since these bikes rev so high anyway hahaha.

Technically, any change to the intake or exhaust warrants looking into jetting.

A 4 into 4 would work and sound better if it had cross-over tubes (IMHO).

The only way you will get a 4 cylinder in-line to sound like a V-twin is to run two of the exhaust ports (180 degrees out) through a real good muffler and the other two straight out. The performance will be about the same as a V-twin (could not resist).

My 'X's XS lost a muffler on her 4 to 2 and it sound so much like a Hardly, the neighbor (Hardly driver) came running over thinking I had bought one.
