ok I've got a 78e w/pod filters Im trying to put on a stock airbox off a 1980g how do get that f@#@#ing thing on do I have to pull the carbs , is their some trick??
garthxs,
You WILL have to drill out the two nipples on the airbox that the vent tubes go to. The top "T" between carbs 1&2, 3&4 are for the bowl vent. The later model carbs had the vent in the venturi, and didn't use the "T". After that, a new K&N filter, drill about six 1/2" holes in the bottom center of the box, and you are ready to go.

Hello garthxs,
In my case, with my 81H, my carbs went on first because my rubbers were all hard and I needed the wiggle room. After they were in it looked like the top of the air box would slide right in. I soon found out, as you have, that more room is needed so I removed the top bracket and pushed in the velocity stacks and it went into place just fine. The problems started when I had to get my fists of ham up into the housing to hold things as needed for reassembly of the bracket. It's all together now even the tubular suports and rubber vibration gaskets on both sides are in properly. With patients and twisty fingers it can be done.

I took mine out to inspect it when I replaced the filter with a new one. With the lower half off and the clamps off the rubber boots, I was able to finess it out. I did this from the right side of the bike and the seat was off and the tank was lifted up a bit to work around the fuel lines. It can be done.
I have found that the best way, and the fastest, is to rest the top half of the airbox in place. Take your carbs and slide them in through underneath everything. You have to jostle them around a bit. Make sure that you turn the clutch cable holder to the side before you slide them in. Once they are in the corect position, rotate them forwards and backwards to put them in the intake boots. Once those are in, the velocity stacks will go on around the carbs by moving the airbox around. I like the looks of the airbox and with some practice, it only takes a few minutes. I also straddle the bike with my hands on either side of the carbs. In my book, their is no other way. The longest part is tightening the clamps.

If I can do it at 18 yrs old, anyone can

When putting the carbs in, get them started about half way in then install the throttle cable. It's much easier than when the carbs are in place. Install the airbox side on the carbs first then push the whole assembly forward into the manifold rubbers.

this is the only thing I hate about this bike. Will be fixing this problem permanently and getting rid off the box. The two screws that hang the rear of the airbox and that pain in the !@#$@ top hanger are a pisser to get the box out itself....I feel for ya

Top hanger? I just bend it forward to move the airbox, and then I just leave it bent, and don't bother trying to bolt it back up. The two on the sides is enough. I don't know why you have a difficult time with the airbox wingnuts...mine are easy to loosen. Do yours just fall all the way out? If they do, there is an easy fix for that.
