OK, so now that I know what caused my bike to suddenly lock up, I need to know where to find a part. It is the gear which connects the driveshaft to the final drive. I do not know the technical name, but it transfers power from the driveshaft then sends it perpendicularly to the final drive gear whick lines up on the wheel. The bearings are welded to the part, and there doesn't seem to be any way to remove the bearing from the gear. If anyone knows where to get one, or has one in good condition, that would be great!! Thanks again everyone!! RB

Nasty
The part you've got trouble with is the 'middle drive gear'
Not had trouble with mine - so no direct advice
However, have discussed problems with Bob (via email) at Merriam cycles. He and his mechanics are really switched on when if comes to XS11's
http://www.merriamcycles.com/
Failing that - I'd look for a whole replacement middle drive gear from a bike parter (breaker).
Good luckXS1.1 sport - Sold June 2005 :-(

Sounds like the part is in the hub and not in the middle gear drive.Gary Granger

Hello dspshemp,
I think there is some conufusion here as to which parts you are having problems with. I would go to
http://bikebandit.com/PartsBandit/
and look under OEM parts. They have online parts microfiches and you cna find out the correct name of the part you are looking for. If you find out what is broken, one of the list members or your local bike salvageyard may have the parts you are looking for.
Also if you do not have it yet, I would suggest emailing Rob Mills and purchase a copy of the XS/XS1100 CD, I believe the money goes to charity.
Find out what part you need and over half the work is already finished!Bill Woods

The reason I don't know what to call it is because it is the unnumbered part between 7 & 16 on the diagram. It is an important part, and I have no way of figuring out the proper name for it, and I cannot order it from Yamaha without a part #. In addition, it is the same in the Clymer manual, PartsFish, Bike Bandit, and the Yamaha OEM CD. HELP ME!!!!! Thanks. RB

That would be a pinion gear in a car, so I would say it is the same part here. Since the ring and pinion wear together, you always change them together. So I would say you are looking for a whole new rear gear (or rear hub) assembly. Should be fairly cheap, I think Venture and V-max will also work. Good Luck, I have one I know leaks , I was just keeping it for parts, if worse comes to worse I will send it to you for shipping and handling costs (not cheap they are heavy) and I will have to hassle with a heavy duty box. If you are interested in this (as a last resort) please contact me by private e-mail.Gary Granger
