  • Thick Grips

I'd like to replace the stock handlebar grips with some thicker ones, makes my hands ache gripping the originals. Has anyone done this? Mikes XS have a couple of nice looking ones but it's tough to tell what diameter they are.
Plus is it an awkward job?

    grips

I went for the thinner ones to cure my hand ache and I had the foam ones. I think the ones from MilesXS will work as these bikes have the 7/8 inch bars . I tried a tip and put mine on with hair spray . Worked really slick . Havent come loose like other glues did.

        Hairspray

Not sure if its a official tip but spray in your grip and slide it on quick then it will set up . BTW I got gel grips last time and they rock . Careful with the throttle side as the plastic throttle sleeve can be brittle . You may want to just spray inside the grip but not too much . Others who have used this method please chime in . I may have forgotton a step .

            Superbike Gel

I got the exact grips that MikesXS has . They are the gel Superbike grips . I think they make the bike go faster . I used to have sore hands a lot but no more .

                hairspray

This is the best way to put grips on any thing, from dirtbikes ,bicycles and golf clubs , The golf pro at the course I used to work at used 2'' wide 2 sided masking tape on the shaft of the club and sprayed the inside of the grip and also the tape , slips on super easy and you can position the grip perfectly, down side you have to wait for it to dry , and you will look funny buying aquanet

                  How about Oury Grips?

I really like the Oury grips - not too thick and not too thin. Kind of hard to fiind but really nice, IMHO. I think I got them at J.C Whitney or Dennis Kirk.
I used 3M weather strip adhesive in a tube to mount them and it works great.

I had the "gel" type grips and liked them but they got slippery on me after a while and I replaced them with the foam type. These were VERY nice but found out that after they get wet they are uncomfortable and after they get wet a couple of times they started turning my hands black. I thought that was due to the fact that they were a cheaper grip but last year a buddy of mine bought a brand new bike and it had the foam type grips and any moisture at all does the same thing to him.
Finally bit the bullet and bought a set of Kuryakyn grips. They are a bit on the pricey side but you will have to really show me something WAY different and spectacuar to get these off the bike. My buddy tried them just one time and his foamers came off that same day.

These grips are quite a bit larger in diameter and very soft, with more cushion the gel types. The ridge type or the bubble type as I have are very easy to hang on to even if it is cold and wet. Just luv the things

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!

I bought a set of those smooth foam grips with the stainless ends. They are made by Grab On. I got them from Dennis Kirk. I got them for $23.99 online.

The left one went on fairly easy. Getting the right one over the edges of the throttle was really tough. I took a sharp tool and trimmed the rubber edge inside the grip, then lubed it up with CRC. A little help from a rubber mallet and it was on.

My hands ache some when riding so I had to get the foam over rubber grips hoping they will help more.

I need to change my grips. They are old foam and feel rough to my hands. I've never changed grips before. Is it hard to do?

I can't say if all throttles have the sharp edges on the end but the edges on mine (the plastic throttle underneath) is what caused most of my issues.

I simply cut the old ones off rather than trying to pull them off. As I said, the left one went on real easy. It was just those darned edges on the throttle that made the right one difficult.

Another trick is to boil the grips for a few minutes which makes the rubber very soft and easy to slip onto the bars. I used silicone as the adhesive. Of course, you can't boil all types of grips but the solid rubber / gel ones you can.
