I went to Mikes XS looking for a cancelling unit. I should NEVER do that, as everytime I'm on that site I see something else I just have to have. They have a brand new 5 X 7 headlight bucket with trim ring and the light for $35. Ewwww, Shy-nee. They also have the super blue high intensity bulbs, Mikes XS part #10-0027. I hate those things when their coming at me in some high-dollar cage. I figure it's time for me to stop crabbing about it and start fighting back.
Anybody know if that bulb will fit in a standard headlight housing? They also have an $8 2-prong flasher that looks like a good replacement if I decide to can the self-cancelling, although I just got back from a short ride and it seems to be working pretty good. A lot of my frustration with it is probably due to not fully understanding how it's supposed to work until you guys put me on the right track.
DBI think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Hey MRO,
I've never had them shut off unless I was moving. Maybe mine are not working correctly either... I've never heard about the Flasher timer before. What do you do at a long stop light? Do you have to keep turning them on? How long should they flash before the timer turns them off? Maybe the canceller uses a combination of time and distance but does not shut them off unless the bike is moving?? I don't have my manual with me but I'll read up on it. I hate it when I don't know something like this!

Tim - I finally found that little bugger. It's back by the TCI on my '79 standard. Cleaned the connection and reassembled with a generous amount of dielectric grease, and they're working pretty good now.
I think this may be one of those times when everybody's right. You have an '81SH which has different electronics than my '79. You've got the hazard flasher in the mix, the flasher relay is a different part number but the cancelling unit is the same. Maybe Yamaha fixed the stop-light-stops-flashing bug in the later models.

I installed new turn lights front and back this afternoon. Should have seen me playing "hunt and peck" for the right wire that made the turn signals work correctly. I almost quit but kept on checking.....finally, got it all to work.
I wish I took some notes to pass on. I know one black wire went to a brown to get the signal to work. But like I said, the turn signals work along with the 4 way hazards so life is good!
Hmmm...I hope I didn't disconnect something else I needed.
Question: the headlight doesn't come on until the engine is running, correct?

DJinNH - Depends on the controls. On my '79 there's a light on/off switch on the right handlebar. If it's in the 'on' position the light comes on when I turn the ignition on. If it's off, the light doesn't come on until the engine starts. On newer models I think they did away with the switch. My brother has an '80 and it doesn't have the switch. His light just comes on when the engine starts.I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

As per the Yamaha manual,
Generally, the signals will cancel after 10 seconds or 150 meters whichever is greater. At very low speed the function is deturmined by distance. At high speed it is deturmined by time. At low speed especially when changing speeds the canceling deturmination is a combination of both time and distance.
Sometimes it works as planned, sometimes not.

Mike - As it looks like you've owned one of each (no wonder you're a super guru ) I'm sure you know this. Do the 70's and 80's models work the same way? Any difference in operation between the G and H models?I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
