  • Where does that darn wire go?!!

I got fiddling around with my turn signals to find out why the automatic cancel is flakey. Took the signal switch apart and found a brown wire with a white stripe dangling. I thought no problem, I'll just check the schematics. Then I remembered, I'M NOT AN ELECTRICIAN I would probably do better deciphering hyroglyphics. Anyone know what that wire is supposed to connect to?
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Give me 24 hours, and I'll have an answer. I have a unit apart in my storage shed, but it's a ride south of the house.

Do your turn signals work? The brown/white wire should be the power wire feeding the turn signal circuit. It should come from the turn signal flasher right below the fuse box.

A brown/white wire goes from the turn signal switch to the flasher relay. Is one of your switch contacts missing a wire?

Thanks for the replies. Ray - gotta love a guy who'll take a ride just to help somebody out. This forum is chock full of those kinds of people, and I love you folks even though I know I ain't gettin' your Bud Lights

I went back out and took another look. There were only two possible locations it could have come from, so naturally I soldered the wrong one first. It went into the center location of the actual switch. So much for that.

Here's another question: How is that canceler supposed to work? It seems to be functioning correctly. I make a turn and depending on how hard I'm getting into the carbs it cancels somewhere between 25 and 40mph. Anybody know the theory behind it? I know there's a magnet in the speedo somewhere, and I've already had the magnetic switch out (it looked OK). Is the speedo magnet adjustable?

Inside the round can we call the flasher, there is a time delay that will turn your signals off. The contact points inside get dirty like the points on old car ignitions, and the time delay is not always the same. I bought my SF at one year old, and if I turned on the signals very far ahead of the turn, they would turn off before I got there. Now it takes a lot longer for them to cancel.

So replacing the flasher will change the delay? It's down by the fuseblock, right?

                Hey DB,

It will also change your WALLET!!! They are like $90.00 from Yamaha! If you put on a basic 2 prong flasher, you loose the self cancelling feature. I actually prefer to cancel them myself, like Rover said, was annoying that it would actually turn OFF before I made the turn.....I like to signal in plenty of time for drivers behind and ahead of me to see and respond!!!

TC - well, that certainly changes the delay. There'll be one heckuva delay before I spend 90 bucks on a flasher! Thanks for the reply - always appreciated.

The flasher unit has nothing to do with the turn-cancelling function. The speedo reed switch sends pulses that are recieved by the cancelling unit (not the flasher) and the cancelling unit turns the signals off after the bike has traveled a certain number of feet. Has nothing to do with speed or time - just distance traveled.

Pastor - See, that's what I thought. However my turn signals will shut themselves off - even if I'm not moving. Same problem Rover and TC alluded to. Something has to be turning them off. Where's the cancelling unit located? I'm thinking I'm going to put a regular flasher on it and see what happens. After reworking the switch on the handlebar it's workin' real smooth, so if I have to do it manually that would be OK. It always makes me feel like my rear-end is hanging out when I'm making a left across traffic when I noticed the flasher quit flashing. Really annoying and not real safe.

                        turn-cancelling function

There happens to be a "flasher canceling unit" seperate from the flashers.

                        Connected with 5 wires.
White Green, speedometer sender (reed switch)
                        Black, ground
                        Yellow/red, turn switch
                        Yellow/green, flasher
Brown, power to unit and flasher (from 20 Amp fuse on fuse block)

Self cancel works with both distace traveled(speedometer sender)
and amount of time flasher is engaged.

MRO - found it on the fiche - thanks for the heads-up. Bikebandit wants $99!!! I'd fiddle with it but it doesn't look very fiddleable. I think I'll try cleaning the connections good on that and the flasher and see if that nets me anything. I'm thinking TC's advice is probably a good idea - ditch the self cancelling and give my thumb a workout. There are a lot of young kids driving around where I live and ride, and they barely pay attention when the flasher is on!

There is an aftermarket unit that works well, I have one on my "G". and only costs half of what Yamaha wants. Search the forum to find the details, and if that doesn't work, let me know and I'll dig up the details.
