    Hi Da-Bubble,

'Cos if the clear "pairing" of the plugs, it might well be related to fuel flow from the tank; You sanded and painted the tank?... could be the filters INSIDE the tank.

Check that you have a good flow of fuel from each side of the tank. If the octy is still in there, THROW IT AWAY........

If you can't hear the changes in idle as you adjust the idle mix, you have a problem somewhere which is beyond just tuning; you either have a circuit not flowing, or you need someone with "tuned-in" ears.......

Stick with it; It looks beautiful, it will go equally well!

Hi Da-Bubble. Just a thought. Are the plug wires going to the correct plugs? Mine was doing the stutter thing also. I looked at the wiring diagram in the book and found out that, yes, i am really that dumb

Okay, I'll give you that. Now, when you were trying to do the "ear tune", on the two problem carbs, did you ever get even the slightest amount of variation in sound and engine speed? I'm talking about starting from about 800rpm, taking the screw all the way in to lightly seated if needed, and backing out to 5 or 6 turns if needed. If the tips and bores are in good shape, and if the orifices feeding the circuit are actually squeaky clean, somewhere between lightly seated and 6 turns out there will be a sweet spot. If there is no sweet spot, then that circuit is not doing anything at all i.e. it is blocked. To reiterate, if lightly seated i.e. no flow at all, is the same as everything else, then everything else is also no flow at all.

Ok. My fuel flow is plenty. No Octy, dual inline cone filters.

New coils and wires and they are in the right places.

The stutter that used to only affect low end now happens thoughout the rpm range. It will idle and rev just fine with an occasional pop throught the exhaust at idle. When I did get it to rev, as it tries to wind out it just boggs and falls on it's face.

I just pulled the plugs and they are soot black as I suspected. I think I went from too lean to way too rich. Is this something I can try to lean out with float height? If I set them at 25mm that will lean it, correct?

Ken, 5 or 6 turns? I didn't go that far out. I will try it again before I pull the carbs. I did take a couple of them all the way in to lightly seated with no change.

I swore I was done messing with this and was going to beg for help from the one guy in town I know can fix it. Problem is it's busy season for bikes and he doesn't like to mess with old stuff unless it's winter and he has the time....and no it's not the same jerk that screwed it up last time!

Aside from what Ken said, I want to be sure that these are 79SF carbs?? You have the float height at 23mm?? Stock is 25.7 +/- 1.0mm.

And to make sure, you do have the caps on the pilot jet towers IF these are 79 carbs vs. 80-81's?? Hang in there, we'll get you right, just may take some more tinkering!

I do have the 79 carbs I believe. The pilot jet towers have a little flat screw and washer at the top. Also my pilots don't have the 'O ring and washer.
