  • 3 out of 4 Aint Bad.......

    Hi All,
Haven't been on here in a while........
Anyway, no not a spin off from the Meatloaf song....lol.....Been doing my usual spring prep when decided to pull carbs and lean float 1 mm more. Had still been working with a slight rich condition. Floats @ 23mm, mix screws @ 3/4 out. Results are #1 - a bit lean, #2 & #3 are spot-on. #4 however still rich. Looks like will be going back in. Looking at the needle/seat & o-ring for possible culprit. Any one ever run into Choke/Enrichment circuit problems causing rich condition?
Did have a little scare...............Checked valves, all with in tolerance, Adj. cam chain, & yes I herd the plunger tighten up..OK. While warming engine for oil/filter change, started out smooth & quite, when the terrible top end noise started! CRAP!!!!!!!!!! What now!
After some disconcerting time.......proceeded to change oil & filter and recheck cam chain adjustment. Sure enough, the threads in the housing were striped, did feel a little spongy. Removed tensioner and installed HeliCoil. Does require small punch to break off that little tab off the coil after install to allow bolt to tighten the plunger. Reinstalled & Adj.----good to go! Will be getting new one soon.

After putting in a helicoil, your adjuster is now as good or better then anything else you will find - no need for a new one.

Yea, That was my thinking too Ken. It had been leaking slightly lately. Wish I would have had a seal at this time, but oh well. The seal will be replaced if not complete assy.
Any thoughts on #4? Heading to the garage right now for plan of attack. Carbs, Carbs, Carbs is my thinking.....but I am still on orig. coils & wires?? Hummm...........

I'm leaning towards carbs too, but you might try swapping the plugs around. Once in a while somebody comes up against a bad plug, even fron fresh out of the box. A poor connection between the plug cap and the plug wire can also give you grief, as can a bad resistor in a resistor style plug cap.

          some days are like that....

Well I went through #4 needle/seat, o-ring & even checked the slider needle to make sure po hadn't slipped incorrect one in there. Everything looked good, so I went half mm more on the float. Checked primary & secondary on coils....primary right on spec., funky readings on sec. Don't have them with me?
As I was going to make a run after re-sync and buttoned up,went for the helmet and start it up. NO CRANK!! Man, I'M done for tonight.........Seems like my SOME days are turning into weeks!

Check the kill switch. Sometimes it helps to turn it OFF, then back to RUN. JAT

              Oooohhhh What A Feeling!

Well, Seems poetic I guess on 200th post that I believe I finally got it. (lil' fluff in there)
As it turned out, apparently didn't have good charge in batt. Kill switch was my first thought too Ray. After doing multiple continuity tests, started checking voltage. Red/White & Blue coming out of solenoid----1.8v, blue @ starter button----1.8v hummmm? 10.2 batt. voltage. Well CRAP!
Checked all connections -OK. Carb tuning had zapped the juice I guess? Weak to start with probably. Strange things seem to happen with voltage & weak supply? Two day charge & cranks every time.
              Carb Tweaking.........COMPLETE!
#4 cleaned up & looks good. Oh, such a more crisp & quicker response!
Next on the list......TKAT, Coil upgrade, Cam chain....but it's time to ride for now.....
              Thanks to All
