    air

If you can "pump up" the system, it means there is still some air in there. After a few more bleeds, hopefully it'll be ok.

      Stainless Lines

What did cyclebrakes charge you for the Galfer brake lines? Did they have clamped on fittings or did they have screw in fittings?
      Thanks Tom

The Galfer kit for the 1979 - 1981 XS1100SF "Special" is FK003D611-3 (colour). Kit comes with bolts and washers. Hel is "Hose-Equip Limited" Performance Products. For line lengths check out http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx [/B]
Hi Nemesis...I want to do the same upgrade to my '81XS1100SH.This Galfer kit...does it already come with the correct lengths of hose/brakes lines? Is the kit complete? What abt the calipers?Rbuild? Replace or just clean. My brake calipers stick and some days they'll loosen up and other days they wont. Its been driving me nuts...so i gotta fix it once and for all.

              Hey Madmax,

The Galfer kit with all new mounting hardware fit perfectly on my 79 special. It's a 3 line kit for the front with new bolts and crushwashers all around. All I had to choose was the color I wanted....

Since I was going through all the trouble of changeing the lines I figured this would be a good time to refresh the rest of the system. So I rebuilt the master cylinder and the calipers (shotgun approach).

After going completely through my system, I would recommend rebuilding the master cylinder and just cleaning the calipers (as long as they don't leak now and the dust boots are good then just a good cleaning of them should be fine). The reason I recommend the MC rebuild is because of the shape of mine when I opened it up.

I found that the things that cause sticking just like you described is a dirty spooge hole, dirty pistons and old brake fluid.

Now is all this trouble worth it? Well I just got my answer...... I was traveling home yesterday, cruiseing around 80 in the middle lane when the guy on the right decided to cut into my lane. I locked the wheels and the bike screeched in a perfectly straight line and avoided an accident. "lines just paid for themselves"!

Glad to hear they worked when you needed them most!So let me get this straight...The Galfer kit contains everything inclding the right sized SS hoses for the front calipers? What abt the rear brake? As for rebuilding the M/Cs'what exactly is rebuilt?I thought just cleaning would be sufficient..it just might be in my case...how would i know if they needed to be rebuilt? Thanks for your comments..I will prolly want this Galfer kit....ok gonna check back in the thread to see how to gt it...Thanks BNE

                  Hey madmax,
Yep the kit has all 3 hoses, all bolts and crush washers.
I think you can have one custom made for the rear. I haven't worked on the rear but, I plan on rebuilding the rear next month when I get a new rear tire.
From what I've heard the calipers rarely need to be rebuilt, just cleaned. On the other hand MC rebuild is recommended every 2 years. So if the it's been awhile might as well be sure your new brake lines work when you hit the lever.
