This might sound like a stupid question, but when doing an oil change on 82 xj11 is there anything else to do other than remove the drain plug and change the filter. I have a 05 Yamaha atv and you have to drain the cylinder head with an oil change, do you have to do anything like that with the xj11? Also wondering what type of oil is best to use. Thanks.

conky,
Doing an engine oil change on these machines, just the crankcase oil and filter get changed. Some of the better filter brands also include new o-rings for the filter cup.
The best oil to use? If you do a search here, you'll find about a hundred different opinions! In all of my air cooled applications, I've always used Castrol 20W50.

I know that a Fram CH-6002 filter includes the cup O-ring as well as the center screw O-ring. I have used Castrol 4T cycle oil, 20W50, with great results (clutch seems to like it).Mike Giroir

IIRC, the XJ11 uses the same filter as...
the Mighty V-max (85-95). Or, more appropriately for this forum, the Mighty V-max uses the same filter as the XS/XJ11.

but wait, there's more!
My EMGO filter don't have the filter bowl o-ring in the box with it but it does say VMX 12-MAX 85-95 XJ1100 MAXIM 82, XS750/S 77-80, XS850/L/S 80-81, XS1100 ALL 78-81, XVS12/13 ALL 83-94.
Now if I could afford to own all those different machines would I care about having to only keep one style of filter for them? Perhaps not but it surely lessens a dealer's inventory problems.Fred Hill, S'toon

Fram CH-6002 filter includes the cup O-ring as well as the center screw O-ring
The o-rings that came with the fram filter were right diameter (length) but were too skinny, so wound up using the old ones

i did 4 changes with old o rings and it is still holding, just don't tighten the housing bolt too much you'll regret it. and make sure the spring and washer goes on the housing first then the filter"a good man knows his limitations" dirty harry

Anyway, the Fram filters seem to work OK.Mike Giroir
