    Hi Peter,
here's a trick I read about on another list concerning how to get the springs off a rear shock. It sounds scary so wear the same full face mask you'd use for heavy duty angle-grinding.
Take the center piece out of a hydraulic scissor jack to leave a hole the bottom of the shock will fit in. Run a loop of chain with 2 sturdy hooks on it under the jack and put the hooks over the spring's coils as high as they will go. Pump the jack and the chain will tighten to compress the spring. Now you can take the keeper pieces out and release the jack to let the spring extend to be lifted off. You REALLY want to do this?

Here's what I use to compress those shock springs. Home made and works very well.

        Shocks springs

Somewhere on this site is a article about building a hyd press to take the springs apart. It works because i built one and have taken at least 6 shock springs apart with it. Maybe someone who knows where it it can post it here. Like fredintoon said make sure you make a bracket to hold the bottom of the shock. It is real easy with this press.
        Thanks Tom
