  • how to get calipers out?

I looked at some pix topcat took, tried to clean my rear caliper and the sucker stays in, even if it plays a little back and forth when I pinch it in the vise.

I am trying to fix the dragging problem, the mc has been cleaned, but caliper doesn't come back. I know it the return hole could be clogged, I rather think it's the caliper that has too much friction and it that it needs inspection anyway.

    Huh?

Stuff a rag in the caliper. Use an air nozzle and put some air pressure on it. If it moves out with minimal pressure, push it back in and do it again. Eventually it will move all the way out. If it doesn't move, increase the pressure. BE VERY CAREFUL! The other way would be to pump it out with the MC.

      What he said...

My fronts were completely siezed. I tried the grease gun trick...very messy and my tube from the gun to caliper exploded! I then moved on to the compressor. Just use a bolt to block the brake line hole and stick the blow gun in the bleeder hole (bleeder removed of course). The rag(s) should be stuffed in between the caliper to keep the piston from breaking it or you! It makes a very satisfying POP at about 150 PSI.

I remember that as being a wee bit 'startling' at the time, was really glad I had stuffed lots of layers of shop rag between the piston and the other side of the caliper, and had all fingers well out of the way...

I've used air compressor to remove em.
The pistons on the front calipers of my G had rust and pits.
Was f=going to replace them until I checked my finances
To my surprise they cleaned up pretty good (still had pits) and worked just fine, no leaks and best of all stopped the bike as planned. 30,000 miles later no problems

I might go for the mc procedure, the compressor being currently unavailable.

I guess extra extra rags for the fluid projection?

Don't forget to keep an eye on the MC reservoir.
Level drop too low, piston will still be in there and you will then need to bleed em.

How about using the air hose at a gas station?

Yes, have plenty of rags available. New SS pistons are sometimes available on ebay for a reasonable price. Plus, ss doesnt rust or pit.

Extra rags to prevent ricochets 'cause that sucker's gonna come outta there with a vengeance!

Would seriously hurt your hand if it were in the way.

Works very well though,... I had to tap the piston on mine a couple of times with a plastic mallet to break it free, then stuffed a rag in and put it on the floor...hit it with 90 PSI...BANG. Problem fixed.
