I did some research on this a long time ago and was told by the experts in the field that to generate more electric we need more turns of larger diameter wire in the alternator. There is not enough room in there for that. I don't under stand the need these days as there is LED everything available. Just replace some of those lights with LED's and the problem is solved.

Getting back to the original question "would you pay ~$300 for a more powerful alternator?"
If my old one died that cost would be comparable to good used replacements so, maybe yeah.
But it's bigger, he sez. So the elephant in the room is that I'd also need a different cover casting to fit around it.
Betcha getting a custom sand cast aluminum cover would run you into the $1,000s
(OK, $999.99 each if you wanted 12 of them.)
So no, used parts and perhaps a Geezer reg/rect for me.

cost of new "alternator"

when I bought my '80 special last year the alternator was not charging. I replaced the stator with a new one from rick's(actually they completely rebuilt mine). charging problem solved, this new unit puts out 12.5vdc at idle(1000rpm) and goes to 14.5vdc when rev'd. cost was about $150.00. don't know how many amps the system produces but I have all stock lightbulbs, an accessory led strip license plate holder, I've converted my stock front yellow frame reflectors to lights wired into my front turn indicators, and I regularly use my 2.5 amp heated vest on cold mornings. haven't had a single battery/charging problem since installing the new stator.

Nice! Not being a doubter, but with the headlights and runners switched off my stock alternator will show 12.5 volts at idle also (or what ever the charge state is of the battery) but it slowly drops voltage as the bike idles. Does yours hold the voltage at idle?

the voltage on my vom stays at 12.3-12.5 at idle. I do have a very good agm battery in the bike, could that make a difference in how the charging system performs? this battery spins the engine over like crazy when starting...

Suspect would be voltage reg. or the all important smoke has run into resistance at the ignition or kill switch Skids.

I choose to believe that there just isn't enough smoke generated at idle with the OEM system (all three xs11's).

Hey Nubian,

The idea of trying to stuff more windings or such INTO the OEM alt cover was abandoned, but not the idea of trying to put a stronger alternator onto our machines...so I decided to play a couple of years ago, see this megathread for the details and such!

I have still YET to make the tech tip for this Extreme Mod! At least the photos are still where they are needed in both my photobucket account and this thread. It's been on there now for about 2 years, of course I only put about 2K mile on my bike each year, but with running the twisties and such, it's been a durable mod so far!!!
