    Hobbyman and others ...

Planedick is workin' on a high output alternator too .... believe me when I tell you, if he says he can make it, he can. Don't know where he's at on the project .... and for some reason, he hasn't posted on this thread .... Planedick ... you're exposed, might as well weigh in :-)

      discoveries

I have found that the cost is prohibitive. Necesitates remaking of laminates to facilitate larger wire and more windings. I've been thinking of making the field part stronger, but there is the probability of creating an overcharging situation. I'm not sure if the regulator can compensate as regulating the field is the most common way used to regulate the charge rate. Additionally, the higher rate will cause an overheating condition in the windings and possible failure. Project is on indefinate hold.

          FJ

Are the FJ alternators good candidates for an upgrade to the xs11?

The FJ alternators are mounted up on top of the transmission/ behind the cylinders.

                what I'm thinking

I know that the FJ alternator goes there. It also has two 180 degree bolt holes that could mount to a custom adapter....chop

Hi There Bigger would be nice

[QUOTE=Geezer;147286]How much would it be worth to you to double or triple the charging system output on your bike?

I have a system in the design stage at the moment that is promising 45 to 60 amps output. It would include a custom alternator cover that would be a little bigger than stock one. Personally the stock 20 amp alternator has always been enough for me but from time to time the subject comes up.

Right now I have the kit price penciled in at around $250 and it could go a bit higher. How likely are you to buy something like this?

On the other hand once I have all the details worked out it would be pretty easy to adapt the kit to other bikes.

                  Geezer[/QU

I would be very interested in bigger alt... I am putting a front fairing and radio with amp in looking to up the out put. AMPS

I would be interested as well. With a radio and 12 lamps around the trunk, my headlight stays dim until the RPM's come up, so I usually run it on high beam. Anything to stay as noticable as possible!

You sound to be a perfect candidate for one of Geezer's regulator/ rectifier units. An amazing piece of wizardry that gets you that needed power starting at lower rpms from the stock gear. Let me be the first to suggest you check it out.

I have Geezer's Reg/Rect, and it does make a difference in output at lower RPMs. I have LED lights in my trunk and tail light, and a fairing with an HD Radio (no amp). I recently upgraded to a 35W HID headlamp, and that lowered the current draw as well. I kept the stock turn signals because I like the auto-cancel feature. I still see some dimming in the dash lights (still stock too) when the signals flash, but the HID headlamp (by design) does not dim once it's fully warmed up.

I've run for hundreds of miles with a GPS charger plugged into my fairing without a problem, and that was before the HID headlamp upgrade. If you change all your aux lights (trunk/tail) to LED's you'll see a noticable difference, but your stock headlight will always be noticeably dimmer at idle, since the system (even with Geezer's Reg/Rect) does not start charging until the RPM's go up.

Since we are on the subject of lighting/electrical, does the '79 have a "4-way flasher" function? I have yet to figure out where it is.

C Bug-I wish my bike had the auto cancel for turn sigs. My switch is very stiff and sometimes proves difficult to shut off. Usually pushes too far over and turns the other side on! Someday I'll replace the switch.

It has self cancers Richard, you just need to have the right flasher, incandescent bulbs and clean the switch.
