  • sticky speedo...

i just swaped the stock 160 speedo back in that the po took out. it will get up to speed but it's a little slow getting there??? and when i slow down it is still saying i am going much faster??? the eventually it drops. i sparyed wd 40 on the cable before i reinstalled it and it worked fine with the 85 mph speedo . should i take it back apart and lube the 160 up somewhere? also upon replacing the top bulb in the tach i think i knocked a wire loose because the tach is now twitchy some. any ideas?

Mine does the same thing every once in a while. I haven't looked into it much since it is so rare and random, but mine is often associated with a whinning noise coming from the speedy. I assumed it was from the cable not being notched up properly/something being stripped.

    Lubing it wouldn't hurt, though...

I would pull the speedo, and lube it buy turning it upside down, and pouring a little LIGHT oil in. Just a few drops of 3in1 oil will probably work well. Let it set upside down for about 1/2 hour, then reinstall it. If it gets to bad, you WILL break speedo cables!! DAMHIK.

well i thought that might do it but the thing worked the day before with the 85 mph speedo and the odometer is right on the money. i held her perfectly at 60 mph and looked at the od. and looked at the mile marker and at exactly 1 mile it was 1 mile ahead on the odometer so i think it's working but the speedo needs lube... would wd 40 be ok in there?

but drys up and disapears in a short time.

              Had the same problem

Bike had sat for a looooong time.
The speedo started howling when I first got it out for a shake down. I thought the top end was seizing up.

It would also happily tell me I was going fifty mph, after I stopped at the light.
Anyway, had to dissassemble the speedo and put some light oil in the works.
