Show me your oil cooler

I am working on a project that uses the two mounting holes the oil cooler(s) use. I want to make sure I don't prevent an oil cooler from being attached.

If you get a chance, post a picture of your oil cooler mounted on your XS.

I had to fabricate and weld a two brackets on my fabricated and welded fairing bracket.. lol. Up where I mounted it, it should still get some good wind, but not rob the air for the cooling fins of the motor. As far as I know, I don't think anyone else has this type of oil cooler. I didn't want to use the radiator style. I don't think you'll really see it when the fairing is on. It's supposed to work even when no air is blowing across it??? We shall see....

I guess my point is (Besides the one on top of my head), is that there's all sorts of mounting points, holes, and bolts on the bike. Bend some metal, make some brackets, and come up with something customized by you to make it work. I used the two bolts/holes that my horn bracket used to be bolted to to attach this fairing mount. I will replace the horn some day, but it won't be with the stock one. Revving the motor works just as well to get someone's attention That weak little "beeeeeep" of the horn would only made people laugh when I was actually honking because I was pissed off! lol.










These may not be what you wanted to see, but it's just to let you know you can think outside the box and do things your own way.

LOL.. Yeah, I have been pretty lazy about putting it back together after the 1179 bore and stuff. It's been too cold and wet to ride anyway... so I just haven't been in any hurry. I keep looking at other stuff on the bike and put off getting it running.

I am taking a shot at fabricating a faring/cowling for Vyger and wanted to make sure I left the option open for an oil cooler.

If it looks like it is going to work out, I will post some pics.

Changing the Oil

OK. I just purchased the OEM cooler adapter plate and lines from a 1981 XS1100 and the radiator from a XS850. Parts match up perfect but I will have to make up a mounting plate. New o-rings on order and it's my spring project.

My question is with the oil change process. How do you clear the old oil from the radiator when changing the oil? The OEM adapter plate has a check-valve to restrict back flow so I would like to avoid dropping a line each time I change the oil from the radiator.

Also, how do you prime this new oil cavity so the crankcase parts are not starved for oil when you start it up? Any tricks other than start it up and shut it right down and top off the crankcase level again?

??? You could pull the spark plugs and crank it 10 or 15 seconds. But, if it has the check valve, it may also be a thermostat in there that won't let the oil get into the cooler until it's warm anyway.
