I don't worry about the oil when I change it. Just don't accelerate it until the oil light goes out. There is enough oil still on the wear surfaces to be protected until the pressure builds. The oil that remains in the cooler and lines isn't really all that much, and if you change it regularly, it will be ok when mixed with the new oil.

From the appearance of the adapter plate and the blow-up schematic, appears to be a simple spring check valve...no T-stat in there.
Do most of you have in line T'stats installed in your oil coolers?

Here's mine, and before anyone asks, the hinged cover is so I can protect it from flying rocks when I ride on gravel roads, which I do a lot, show me a gravel road and I have to see what is at the end.

Here's mine, I thought I had another one laying around somewhere, but I don't see it at the moment.
I think I'm saving them for some kind of bagger project I may build when I get old, but I dont need one on my nekkid/ stock/ everyday/ around town rides. All they are is just more weight, wind resistance and parts to get in the way when I have to repair/ adjust things.

I like the adapter plate with the fins to match the filter cup. I've never seen one.

Does anyone still make these adapter plates? Who originally sold them all? Lockhart and others who made the radiators?

I shined my plate up brilliantly before I installed it.... if you lay on the ground on your belly in front of my bike you can actually see it??

            lol..

It appears the fully assembled cooler and the finned adapter plate is from a 1981 XS1100 model. You can see the parts in this schematic on Bike Bandit

              Bike Bandit Link

I just picked up a used adapter and lines like these, but and had to go with a 1981 XS850 radiator. Lines will work, but will require some customer mounting plates for the raditator...

Will post pics when I get it assembled this spring...

Those adapter plates are OEM on European and other bikes (NZ. Austr. S.Afr) and are part of the complete Oil Cooler Assembly.
You can still find them on Ebay (worldwide).

If you watch the sites like ebay, they are out there and normally go for a good amount of money due to their being harder and harder to find. I ended up bidding on the separate parts (Adapter plate ($31), lines ($53) and XS850 radiator with lines ($45) to get the full set. The adapter plate and line were most critical, but you can get a custom made one by following the links on this site. Many OEM coolers are out there that can be mounted.

It was my late-at-night bidding on eBay that snagged the cooler assembly without the shroud. $51..plus the shipping. Happy with that...
Which means that I actually need some sort of cover for the cooler. Anyone got a lead on one???
