Should I sell or part out?

Hey guys I am a new member but I have been lurking here for about six months off and on.

Great site you guys have with some really nice bikes.

I have a question, I have an XS 1100 Special and I am not sure of the year. A friend gave it to me about six months ago as I was going to convert it to a modern day sportbike, however my land speed racing always seems to take priority. So I have decided to get rid of the bike, anyone know what it is worth complete versus parted out?

It runs now and fires right up, but it needs carb cleaning/tuning as it idles up on its own. Everything seems to work that I have tested with the exception of the front brakes they need to be bled and maybe even a caliper rebuild.

So what do you guys think?

Hey Isiah,

Almost everyone here will say to sell it COMPLETE, since it's already running, and will just need some modest work to get it roadworthy! It looks to be a decent looking 79SF, by the 160MPH speedo, but it has an 80-81 circa seat! Use the Ser.# on the engine/frame to verify the year/model from the guide in the tech tips. Chrome is nice, and those OEM pipes look pristine. It seems to have an oil cooler, and possibly an aftermarket front MC.

With it running, you should be able to get $750-1000 for it.

I don't want to tell you how much you would get for parting it out, but it's usually a bit more, but a lot more trouble taking it all apart!

EDIT your profile, list your location and then post it in the Bikes For Sale forum, and you'll probably get several bites!

If I got somewhere inbetween $750-$1000 I think I would be pretty happy.

Hi Scott,
you will make more money parting it out.
Whether all the extra hassle, being stuck with perhaps half the parts cluttering up the garage when they don't sell and the knowledge that you have done a truly evil thing is worth the few extra dollars is entirely up to you.

If you care about the bike as a milestone, turning-point, classic, motorcycle then sell it to someone that will ride, restore, maintain it.
If it's just a otorcycle, a collection of parts, then part it out. We all need parts to keep ours on the road.
You got it for free so any money you make is money in your pocket.

No actually I do not know the opnion here as my research was mainly on modifications to the existing chassis and converting it to chain.

Since you posted I assume most would like to see the bike in one piece.

I prefer just to sell it as a bike as it would be simpler, but I asked the question because this is the group of people that are educated on these bikes. My goal is to get as much out of it as possible with in reason.

Hey TC, you must have a magic looking glass...even with my glasses on I can not tell what speedo it has. Only knew it was a 79 special for sure by the kick start shaft being visable in the pic.

Good job Scott...I think it is best it is sold as a running bike.. it can be cleaned up and will be kept and ridden another 25 yrs....I value these bikes so if it were me selling ..then it would never be parted out...IMHO

I am not going to part it out, I just don't have the time or space now. I really just want to move the bike so I can finish my land speed bike amd gain the space the bike is take up.
