  • Still cant get them off !!

    Hi guys,
i have been trying to get the barrels off my 79 xs for a month now, haver soaked them, heated them, frozen them and beat the c**p into them with a rubber mallet and still they will not move. it has become a battle between man an bike now. Any ideas on how i can get these jugs off so i can replace the snapped head bolts.

    Happy Christmas

    Gary,

This has worked for others. Turn the crank so cylinders 2&3 are at BDC, stuff rags into cylinders 2&3 and bolt the head on with just the center front & rear bolts.

Turn the crank with the kickstarter by hand. That should lift the cylinder block off the case.

Mine were stuck pretty bad. I used a short piece of 2x4 on the pry points and a 4 lb. sledge hammer.
      Good luck

Guitar string worked in between the case and cylinder to cut the gasket.
Thin putty knives hammered in to break the gasket.

Two flat pry bars. First pry at the two points on the front, then on the back. Repeat about 50 times.

The top end on my 11 was very Zen like. It had become one with everything. Rusted rings kept the pistons from moving. Getting the pistons to move was the real trick. Everything after that was muscle and leverage.

            Do your pistons move?

It took me and a friend and 2 rather long prybars over an hour to get the jugs off my spare motor. Tried to be as careful as possible, but still ended up breaking off a small piece of a fin.

I found that when I took mine apart that it wasn't so much the gasket that was holding the jugs as much as the crud that got down between the head bolts and the jugs. It was like cement. There are a couple of spots that are actually open and will allow dirt to get down in there. I put nuts on the top of the bolts and shocked them both straight down and a little sideways.
                  Just what I found helped.

                    Hi Gary,

Have you checked out this thread HERE

This seems to be a European problem with the barrels as all the salt and road grit on our roads plug up two stud holes at the front of the barrels.

US ones normally come off with a lot of brute force and some choice swear words

                    Good luck..
