    OK guys, thanx for the info. I'll whip off the head when I get the time... meanwhile a friend is selling his VFR. Gonna do some calculating and earning money... I aint selling the XS no matter how good the VFR is.

      Pulled the engine today... left crank oil seal leaking and 2. cyl ex. valve not sealing press..

      Seems that middle drive oil seal (shaft one) doesnt seal... should there be oil in the rubber boot... I don't think so.

      A friend made some drawings for new exhausts... new are expencive, so we're gonna make some.

      Gonna pull the head off when I got the time...

        Strom,
        It looks like your on the way to recovery!
        I wouldn't think there should be oil in the boot.
        Is the oil low in the drive?
        wanted to let you know there are seveal exhusts on ebay now and maybe worth checking out?
        Don't know what ones will send to europe but?

          I drained the oil from the middle drive, then when I removed the boot, more oil poured out (more... as much as from the middle drive).

          Ebay exhausts tend to be expencive and in.. not so good condition. I'm gettin me a new exhaust made, 4 into 2, for the price of the material plus a beer or something.
          It's nice to have friends that know how to do stuff.

            hi strom,its not uncommon for the seals to leak,only solution is to replace it,unfortunately this means reshimming the middle gear box.this is not a job for anyone who is not highly expierienced at this type of job,best of luck with the rebuild mate,exhaust sound like a good deal

              Took off the head today... the #2 cyl intake valve has scrape marks, so it looks like the ex. valve didn't close soon enuff, and it scraped the intake valve. None of the valves seem bent, but I'll have to take them apart to tell for sure. At least one isn't sealing.

              Looks like some valve polishing should do it.

                Determining Bent Valve

                Hey there Strom,

                I had one cylinder that wasn't sealing right, pulled the head off(for the second time!), all the valves looked like they were seated!! So....I pulled the spring keepers and springs off so that I could then leave the valve sitting in the head without any spring tension pulling on it, then I took my finger and spun the valve in the seat and I was 'then' able to see a destinctive "Wobble" of the valve head=definitely bent, had to replace it.

                So....I would suspect with those scratch type marks, if one valve made contact with the other, then most likely one or both are bent, and valve lapping alone won't fix it, just want you to be expecting the worse, hope you are pleasantly surprised, but I'd be surprised if it ISN'T bent!!!                   Valves & stuff

                  Sorry Strom,

                  I'm with ACE on this one. If you suspect that the damage has been caused by the valve impacting anything then almost certainly there be a slight bend and you'll need a replacement.

                  Not sure about contact between inlet and exhaust, didn't think that engine geometry normally allowed this. I'd always assumed that contact was with the piston when the valve is held open for too long and the piston crown comes up to TDC. Sounds like the damage is indicating something a bit different - hmm, I think about that and let you know if anything occurs to me.

                  Anyway - ACE's check will tell you if you've got a bend. I used a piece of flat glass on the kitchen table to check mine. Roll the valve sideways along it and you'll soon see if the stem is true or not.

                    The exhaust valve has 0.25mm clearancy. In the chamber that is. The intake cam wasn't aligned (assembled in a hurry, synced on the wrong markings), so the valves could come in contact.
                    So, I'll take apart the valves, check em out, clean em and polish/replace them.

                      OK... latest update... got 1 bent exhaust valve with bent stem, and one intake valve with ever so slightly bent stem. This valve seals OK, but I'm gonna replace both anyway... just gotta find some for 78E.
